Madam Shrimp Ginza: A 9,880-Yen All-Shrimp Course

A note on the words: ebi can refer to shrimp or lobster, and this course includes both. Tenshi ebi (New Caledonian blue shrimp) and amaebi (sweet shrimp) appear alongside brown tiger shrimp; kuma ebi (a large shrimp) follows as a separate dish. Ise ebi means Japanese spiny lobster, served here as a tail, while the lobster in the next dish is dipped in cheese, fondue style. Sakura shrimp are another variety counted among those in the meal. Bisque is a smooth shellfish soup, here made with lobster and aromatic vegetables; ragu bianco means a ragu without tomato, here the seafood sauce for the pasta.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Dinner tonight was in Ginza! I have been getting into shrimp lately and visiting a few restaurants that specialize in them. This time it was Madam Shrimp Ginza, a shrimp specialty restaurant in Ginza. I like the name: Madam. Shrimp. It is roughly in the middle of Ginza, Shimbashi and Uchisaiwaicho stations, a bit of a walk from any of them.

Madam Shrimp course A — 6,980 yen

Madam Shrimp course B (short course) — 6,980 yen

Shrimp and lobster luxury course — 9,880 yen

Special course — 13,000 yen

The special course sounded tempting: apparently it includes every variety of shrimp and lobster the restaurant offered. But since this was my first visit, I went with the most popular option, the luxury course at 9,880 yen.

The course came with a glass of sparkling wine for a toast.

Shrimp and spring vegetable mousse

Shrimp and spring vegetable mousse

Shrimp right from the start! A gentle shrimp aroma drifted up from the mousse-like part, and the bisque-like layer underneath was tasty too.

From the left: brown tiger shrimp, tenshi ebi (New Caledonian blue shrimp), and amaebi (sweet shrimp). Brown tiger shrimp and tenshi ebi have a reputation for being especially tasty. As soon as I took a bite, savory flavor and sweetness spread through my mouth. They were good with the sprouts and beets on the side too. Then the bread arrived!

The little heart drawn in cream was cute.

Kuma ebi (a large shrimp)

Kuma ebi (a large shrimp)

A noticeably bigger shrimp with a wonderfully springy texture! I was told it was kuma ebi (a large shrimp), and it certainly was sizable.
The flesh was firm and full of flavor. I was told I could eat the rich contents of the head too, if I liked. I cracked it open and tried them with the meat. Delicious.

Next came Ise ebi (Japanese spiny lobster)! Was this half a tail, sautéed? The spiny lobster had a satisfying amount of meat.

Lobster, fondue style

Then lobster! What a treat. I dipped it into a bowl of cheese, fondue style. The lobster and cheese went very well together. It was also interesting to compare its flavor and texture with the spiny lobster from the previous dish.

Seafood ragu bianco pasta

Shrimp all the way to the end! The pasta portion was small, which kept the meal nicely balanced. With so many dishes, I probably would not have been able to finish a regular portion at this point. This was just the right size.

Dessert, at least, was not shrimp!

Thank you for the meal!

Seven dishes plus dessert for 9,880 yen seemed like good value to me! I think I tried about eight varieties: lobster, Ise ebi, brown tiger shrimp, tenshi ebi, amaebi, kuma ebi, sakura shrimp, and the regular shrimp on the final pasta. Quite a lineup for a shrimp lover. There are plenty of steakhouses, but far fewer restaurants specializing in shrimp or crab, so I thought this was a welcome find.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
