A note on the words: Chantoya specializes in coconut-milk curry, and its baked-cheese curry (yaki-cheese curry) is served in a piping-hot dish with cheese melted and scorched over the roux. Spice levels run from regular and medium to ookara (very hot) and gekikara (extra hot). The Kanda Curry Grand Prix is a curry event in Tokyo’s Kanda area; this shop is one of the participants.

Chantoya Coconut Curry on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
To all you curry lovers out there, thank you for waiting! It is time for Hangover Meshi!

A coconut-curry specialist right in the middle of the curry battleground in Kanda Ogawamachi. It might be fairly close to Shin-Ochanomizu Station. Apparently the shop grew out of the owner’s love of coconut curry, and there are 14 regular curries alone plus limited-time ones. Having every single one of them be coconut curry is refreshingly single-minded!

For the spice level, regular and medium are free, ookara (very hot) is 30 yen, and gekikara (extra hot) is 50 yen. There are also more than 20 toppings, so it is nice that you can mix and match to your liking. It is also a participant in the Kanda Curry Grand Prix. On top of that, they stock beer and wine too, so being able to have a proper drink even though it is a curry shop is another nice point.

Inside, they use plenty of wood, with a glass front. Video plays on the wall, giving it the feel of a cafe rather than a curry shop. Because there is a counter, you can walk in without hesitation even on your own at night.

Now then, once seated, let us start with this!

Beeeer! Irresistible on a hot day!

Whoa! That looks delicious!
Even before the spoon goes in, the toasty smell of scorched cheese rises up. That aroma alone had me sold. The bowl is very hot, so be careful!

Ookara just adds 30 yen to the listed price. On the first bite, the mellow richness of the coconut wraps the tongue first, and then half a step later the chili slowly warms the back of the throat. Because the heat does not hit first, you can really taste the spice aroma! The melted cheese and crushed tomato nicely round off the edges of that heat. Even at ookara, the heat feels quite mild to me! Gekikara might be just right.

Each ingredient has a clear role. The eggplant melts down and soaks up the roux, and the chicken comes as both chunks and tender shreds so the texture changes with every bite. When you break up the tomato, its acidity spreads out and tightens the sweetness of the coconut.

And this is a shop where the rice is delicious! It goes really well with the curry. This time I had them make the rice a small portion, but if you have the appetite, going for a large portion might be a good idea!
Unusually for me, I was not actually hungover this time, but I thought coconut curry might be great when you are hungover. With its mellow flavor and no sharp edges, your stomach is not startled. Yet the spice aroma stands up firmly, so even a dull tongue can properly enjoy it. In Kanda’s curry battleground, I thought a shop this committed to gentleness is actually a real find!
May you meet something delicious today too!
