Not A Hotel Fukuoka: A Japanese Breakfast Laid Out for You

A note on the words: mentaiko is spiced pollack roe, the signature product of Fukuoka. Goma-saba is another local dish — raw mackerel dressed in soy sauce and sesame. Kinpira is burdock and carrot cut into fine strips and simmered in soy and sugar; shira-ae is vegetables dressed in mashed tofu. Tamago-kake-gohan is a raw egg stirred into hot rice with a little soy sauce, a standard Japanese breakfast. Tonjiru is miso soup made heavy with pork and root vegetables. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Not A Hotel Fukuoka

Not A Hotel Fukuoka on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

I want something good to eat today too. This is Hangover Meshi. The hotel I stayed at this time is a wonderful place. It is called Not A Hotel Fukuoka, the location is good and the room is extremely comfortable. Tell the staff in advance what time you want it, and they come and set out breakfast for you! Getting out of the way so as not to be a nuisance…

Ready!

Let us eat!

The rice and the miso soup you serve yourself.
They leave you a fairly generous amount, so seconds are possible! Anyone who eats a lot in the morning will be pleased!

Let us eat!

And so it looks like this! Ta-da!

Let us eat!

Look at that! (The rice is a large portion, admittedly.)

Let us eat!

Mentaiko, salmon, goma-saba, finely cut kinpira, shira-ae, a raw egg and mentaiko.
The left side of the raw egg is cut off in the photograph, but there was salmon roe on that side! And a rolled omelet.
These eggs are rather good ones too. The yolk was beautiful! So I put it over rice with the soy sauce from the table and made tamago-kake-gohan.

A run of seafood from end to end, which is another good thing! Having it set out so neatly for you lifts the mood.

Let us eat!

Tonjiru, I think — packed with ingredients and very good as well.
Every dish is good, and although I hardly ever eat breakfast normally, and although my stomach had taken a beating from yesterday’s drinking, it went down easily and I even had a small second helping of rice.

Thoroughly satisfied!

Thank you for the meal!

So, I feel as though I have played Fukuoka out, but there is still a little time left, so I intend to eat as much as I can while it lasts! I wonder how many kilos I will have put on by the end of this trip. Incidentally, Not A Hotel Fukuoka is an excellent place both to stay and to eat, and it made for a very good memory! Recommended!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
