A note on the words: shumai are open-topped steamed dumplings, and dim sum here means the small steamed items served alongside them. Fukiyose, literally blown together, is a plating idea borrowed from Japanese cooking: an autumn scatter of small ingredients. Sansho is the Japanese pepper whose green berries leave a numbing tingle, the same effect that defines a Sichuan mapo tofu. Douchi, rendered here as fermented black beans, is salted soybeans used as a seasoning. Momoman is a steamed bun shaped and colored like a peach, eaten as dessert. Shochu is the Japanese distilled spirit, here drunk with soda. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Chinese Cuisine Hoshigaoka on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
I want something good to eat today too. This is Hangover Meshi. I came to Hoshigaoka, the Chinese restaurant inside the Capitol Hotel Tokyu, directly above Tameike-sanno station. I had something to do around here, and the talk was of a leisurely lunch — if you are going in a relatively large group, Chinese is easy to work with. This time a private room was already booked. When the time came they showed us in.

Through the window, the office blocks of Tameike-sanno.
I see — you do not often get to look at them from this angle, so it is a rare experience.

Weekdays only, braised whole shark fin lunch set, 14,674 yen
It was a weekday, so we asked for the Hoshigaoka set.
The Hoshigaoka set. Two main dishes chosen from six. You get to pick freely.
There were exactly six of us, so I asked whether we could have all six kinds and share them around the turntable, a little each.
They obliged. Beer first. A slightly large glass (and priced accordingly), which is very satisfying.

Shrimp, century egg, salad and so on.
A small set of appetizers like this is quite enough to drink over. The quantity is just right, and the dishes they come on are beautiful.
The seasoning throughout is gentle, restrained in salt and fat. I have come to like this refined sort of Chinese cooking lately. Delicious.

Shumai and dim sum. The colors are lovely, and they are full of juices — very good!
This far the course is the same for everybody. From here it moves to the main dishes.
Two kinds each for six people, so I suppose each dish holds two portions.
Before the mains arrived I switched to shochu and soda!

Plump shrimp and seasonal ginkgo nuts in a gentle salt stir-fry. Extremely good.

I think this must be the chef’s recommended dish!
Pork, greens, wood ear mushrooms and egg, stir-fried together.

Not with green pepper and bamboo shoots, but tossed with mushrooms in oyster sauce. This is another flavor that would go with rice.

A stir-fried fish dish. It has been deep-fried first.
Light white fish, fried, tossed together with ingredients cooked in a heavier sauce carrying fermented black beans.
That gives it a flavor a little different from the rest.

Mapo tofu! Rich, restrained in heat, but with a proper numbing tingle — a genuine Sichuan-style mapo tofu.
I think it would go extremely well with rice. Taking it as it is, as something to drink over, is good too.

Twice-cooked pork. Somewhere between the Japanese version and the original. It uses cabbage, but the chili oil and the heat are firmly there.
And yet the flavor is rounded, which may be down to the stock they use being a good one. Gentle, and still substantial. Extremely good!

Dessert is momoman. One each, though by now I am fairly full.
Hotel Chinese really is good. Very satisfying indeed. I drank rather more than I meant to as well. Which is to say — if there are several of you, I strongly recommend ordering the way we did this time. Everyone picks at a little of everything, and that in itself keeps the drinking moving! And in a private room you can talk properly. A thoroughly good time.

Tabelog lunch rating ★★★☆☆ 3.7
I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
