Coffee Sakan Tsudoi, Akasaka-Mitsuke: 900 Yen for Coffee, Toast and an Egg

A note on the words: a kissaten is an old-style Japanese coffee house that typically serves coffee alongside light meals in a relaxed setting, and the morning service is a classic cafe tradition where ordering a morning coffee comes with toast or a waffle at no extra charge. Soba are traditional Japanese buckwheat noodles often eaten quickly as a light meal.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Now, another installment in the Akasaka breakfast series. The other day at Ueshima Coffee House breakfast ended up running a little expensive, which got me wondering how other kissaten (old-style Japanese coffee houses) compare, so this time I headed to “Coffee Sakan Tsudoi Akasaka-mitsuke” right in front of the station! There is also a branch at the Roppongi crossing. I wonder if they have quite a few around here.

Peeking inside, it is surprisingly deep and fairly spacious.
With sofas and comfortable seating, it seems like a spot that might be just right for relaxing. This is definitely how a kissaten ought to be!

They offer a morning service, where ordering a coffee comes with toast or a waffle at no extra charge, so I was told.

I chose a hot coffee, the Premium Rich, and went with toast for the morning service!

After a short wait, the coffee arrived.
As I was told this is Tsudoi’s flagship blend, I took a sip — piping hot!
Well, it was hardly going to be lukewarm coffee, ha. A smooth flavor with a pleasant touch of acidity, delicious. They take their coffee seriously here.

Morning service toast & boiled egg

Morning service toast & boiled egg

Thickly sliced toast. Scoring cuts are made into it, making it easy to tear apart.
For jam you can choose between strawberry, blueberry, and orange marmalade, and I went with strawberry.
Tearing off a piece and taking a bite, butter has thoroughly soaked in, delicious! Putting jam on it is great too. I wonder how long it has been since I last had plain toast like this, ha. Delicious.

And on top of that, it even comes with a boiled egg.
Honestly, this alone is enough to leave you properly full.

By the way, here is the other option, the waffle.

Thank you for the meal!

So there you have it: for 900 yen, a relaxing space, great coffee, and a filling morning-service toast that leaves you satisfied.
Not bad at all! This kissaten might be well worth recommending. When you want to take your time and relax, a kissaten breakfast; when you want to eat quickly, soba. Knowing how to choose between them is key! There are not many places that bring together spots where you can eat breakfast around here. Maybe I will put together a collection.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
