A note on the words: shichirin is a small portable charcoal brazier used right at your table, and hamayaki refers to grilling seafood directly over the coals. Ryoshi-mori is a hearty “fisherman’s platter” of assorted fresh sashimi, here featuring seven varieties including sea urchin and raw shirasu (whitebait). Umekyu is crisp cucumber served with tart salted umeboshi paste, and shime-saba is mackerel cured in salt and vinegar.

Shichirin Hamayaki to Sushi Banya Yoichi Ueno ten on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Whenever I end up drinking around Ueno, the place I almost always stop by is Banya Yoichi. Apparently it is a seafood spot that serves things like sushi, but I do not think I have ever actually eaten sushi here once, ha. That is because by the time I drop in, it is already my third or fourth stop and I am full, ha. When all is said and done, I feel like I mostly come here to enjoy seafood snacks with drinks.

Since I had been drinking since the morning, it was around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon when I came here. There was only one other group of customers, and the place was practically empty!
Well, it also has to do with the fact that not many people are drinking on a weekday afternoon, ha.

The ryoshi-mori (fisherman’s platter) — 1,850 yen
A three-kind sashimi platter — 730 yen
A three-kind white-fish platter — 680 yen
Tuna sashimi — 820 yen
Umekyu — 350 yen

What really shines here, above all, is the sashimi.
What I always order is the ryoshi-mori. A drinking session cannot get underway without ordering this incredible-value dish!

First, a glass of ice-cold highball. Mmm, it was hot outside, so it tasted fantastic!

When you keep on drinking, I suppose your body craves moisture. The fresh, juicy cucumber is delicious!
The saltiness of the umeboshi also serves as a nice pick-me-up, which feels great, ha. I feel like this plum sauce must be sold somewhere, though. I would love to have some at home.

Isn’t 1,850 yen an absolute steal for this? Everything comes with three or four slices each,
making up a seven-kind platter: sea urchin (!!), sea bream, some white fish, squid, tuna, raw shirasu (whitebait), and shime-saba (vinegar-cured mackerel).
Things like sea urchin and raw shirasu hardly ever show up on a sashimi platter at a regular izakaya, do they?
On top of that, the sea urchin is not particularly smelly at all, and I feel like it is on the fairly delicious side. The other fish here are solid and tasty too, so with just this, there is more than enough to snack on.
Actually, I was already pretty full, so it couldn’t be helped, but really I would have liked to have had a drink while grilling shellfish over a shichirin or ordering octopus skewers here, ha. But with this snack, being able to drink five or six glasses of shochu with soda after the highball was plenty enough. (Though that might be the real reason I got full.)
And so, after polishing off the ryoshi-mori, it was on to the next place. When I spend a whole day drinking, I feel like I usually make the rounds of about six places, and this is a spot that almost always makes the list, so I highly recommend it! By the way, someone at another table was once grilling something over a shichirin, ha, and the whole restaurant became extremely smoky, so just be careful if you order the shichirin grilling, ha.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
