Robatayaki, and Why the Counter Is the Whole Point
Robatayaki is charcoal grilling done in front of the customer, and it comes with a piece of theatre most restaurants have quietly dropped: the cook lifts the finished skewer onto a long wooden paddle and reaches it across the counter to you. Robata Musashi still does it. There are tables, and taking one would be a mistake.

Shimbashi is Tokyo’s salaryman drinking district — the place television crews go when they want to film office workers being honest after work. This shop, two minutes from the station, is about as close to unreconstructed Showa-era Tokyo as you can still eat in.
How to Order Without Japanese
The ingredients are laid out in front of the grill. You point. That is the system, and it makes this one of the easiest places in Tokyo to eat well with no Japanese at all. Prices sit at ¥330–450 per item.

What I would point at: anago (¥330), sea eel, plump and hot with sweet glaze. Tsubugai (¥330), whelk, with the chew that shellfish people come for. Ika geso (¥450), grilled squid legs with a pile of ginger — hit it with the shichimi pepper on the counter and it becomes the best drinking food in the room. Hotate (¥450), scallop grilled in its shell with dashi poured in. Sazae (¥450), turban shell, where the liver is the part worth having.

An otoshi cover dish arrives whether you want it or not — mine was a small dumpling I had no use for at a grill counter. Consider it the seat charge and move on.
Access & Practical Tips
- Cash only and smoking is allowed everywhere — the two things most likely to catch a visitor out. If smoke is a problem, this is not your shop.
- No reservations, closed Sundays, opens 15:30.
- Two minutes from Shimbashi Karasumori exit.
- Come as a pair. The counter is the experience, and a group of four will end up at a table.
Hangover Recovery Index
My completely unscientific Hangover Recovery Index: 2 out of 5. Charcoal-grilled shellfish is a fine thing, but a smoky room and a 15:30 opening are not what a damaged morning is asking for. This is where the next hangover starts, not where the last one ends.
Eat well, drink better, and see you at the next hangover.
