A Sake Tasting Course at Manryo, Daimon

A note on the words: a kikizakeshi is a certified sake sommelier, a Japanese qualification for tasting and serving sake. Sakizuke is the small opening dish of a Japanese course. Chiayu are young ayu, or sweetfish, small enough to be eaten whole, bones and all. Inaniwa udon is a thin, flat, hand-stretched udon from Akita in the north.

Right, this is Hangover Meshi. So, the place I visited this time is “Nihonshu Senmonten Manryo” in Daimon. Apparently there is a course where delicious sake just keeps coming forever, and it was recommended to me by someone who loves sake! Well, the shop’s name does say “sake specialist,” after all. I do hope there is plenty of interesting sake to drink.

Menu highlights

[Standard] Course with two hours of all-you-can-drink, 6,600 yen

[Premium] Seasonal tasting course with two hours of all-you-can-drink, 8,000 yen

There appear to be versions without the all-you-can-drink, but if you have come to drink sake, the all-you-can-drink is the one, ha.

[Premium] Seasonal tasting course with two hours of all-you-can-drink (8,000 yen)

Right, we begin. What would you like to start with, they asked — but sake from the very start is perfectly acceptable, you know ^^

And so, first, Sara.

Sakizuke

The way it works is that as soon as your sake runs out, they keep bringing along another recommendation at just the right moment.
The owner is a kikizakeshi, a certified sake sommelier, and it is a pleasure to have him bring things chosen to his own good taste!

Sakizuke

A sake called Miyakanbai “spring time,” and one from the same brewery called Suntetsu. The difference in the flavors is interesting!

The sashimi was fresh and delicious ^^ It really does go with sake.

Kakuemon! There are so many sake here I have never seen before, and that is fun! There truly are a huge number of sake, each with its own flavor, and that is what makes it interesting.

A funny name, and the cat on it is charming.

Oh — how elegant. Tempura of chiayu, young sweetfish!
To think something this impressive would come out! It is beautiful to look at and it is delicious. Being chiayu, you can eat the whole thing as it is.

Last of all, Raifuku.

Inaniwa udon

Inaniwa udon

Smooth Inaniwa udon with a firm bite. Well now, I have drunk quite a lot. Thoroughly satisfied!

Thank you for the meal!

All told I suppose I drank six or so? It is a course where one interesting sake follows another, and there was no question at all of it not being enough! If anything, it was more a case of, have I drunk a bit too much? This place is excellent! And if they introduce me to new sake the next time I come as well, the fun only grows. Recommended.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
