A note on the words: a gotouchi sakaba is an izakaya themed on one particular region of Japan, sending its ingredients up to Tokyo — this one belongs to Yakumo, a town in Hokkaido. Genshiyaki is a way of roasting whole ingredients on skewers stood upright around an open fire. Matsumae-zuke is a Hokkaido pickle of dried squid, kombu and herring roe cured in soy. Otoshi is the small appetizer you are charged for on sitting down; it is the cover charge, not a scam.

Gotouchi Sakaba Hokkaido Yakumo-cho Hamamatsucho on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Right, this is Hangover Meshi. This time, to a Hokkaido regional tavern in Hamamatsucho ^^ — “Gotouchi Sakaba Hokkaido Yakumo-cho Hamamatsucho.” Apparently you can eat all sorts of things you only get in Hokkaido, so I was rather looking forward to it.

The shop is on the second floor. They are pushing the genshiyaki extremely hard — what is that about, ha.
There is a whole pile of things that look good, so I shall just order a la carte as the mood takes me!
I was wondering what to drink first, and found something interesting ^^. The name: “Oishii Gyunyu Hai” — a highball made with Oishii Gyunyu milk, ha ha ha.
What on earth — though I do not think milk is a bad match, really. People put milk in Kahlua, after all, ha.
Plain milk seemed a bit much, though, so I went for the sweeter coffee-milk version.

You pour it in with a flourish, and the taste is perfectly ordinary, ha.
It is rich milk, so there is no sense of it being watered down, and if anything it is dangerously easy to drink ^^

Corn soup ^^

It arrives in a pot, of all things, ha, and a member of staff mixes it for you! What, ha.
This is great fun. And 650 yen for this — is that not too cheap?!

Nicely mixed ^^
Freshly made potato salad, still warm, and delicious!

With a tartare of new-season onion. The flavor has soaked right in and it is delicious!

And this is the genshiyaki!
Shrimp roasted with real gusto, I suppose you would say. Big ones, too, and plump and springy. Cracking!

Unlike the usual dried skate fin — or rather, is this even eihire, ha — it was plump and delicious.

Being able to eat Hokkaido’s seasonal things without going all the way to Hokkaido is a big deal! Genshiyaki is something like robatayaki, I suppose. I shall try the genshiyaki of other fish, and the sashimi, next time. The potato salad was extremely good, so I recommend it! I shall come back in a different season and eat again!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
