A note on the words: Kinki Daigaku Suisan Kenkyujo means the Fisheries Laboratory of Kinki University, and the shop serves fish the university farms. Otoshi is the small appetizer you are charged for on sitting down. Chawanmushi is a savory steamed egg custard. Namero is a coastal dish of fish chopped up with miso. Kama is the collar cut behind the gills. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Kinki Daigaku Suisan Kenkyujo Ginza on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Hello, this is Hangover Meshi! Kinki University Fisheries Laboratory! I have been curious about it since walking past years ago, and my memory is that there was quite a line back then. Surely by now one can get in? So I made a reservation and went. We were able to gather fairly early, so we did an opening dash at 17:00 and sure enough had the place to ourselves for a while lol Well, that follows.

The tuna-face sign at the entrance is realistic ^^ Or rather, the eyes lol

Ordering is done on a tablet.
Now and then a member of staff comes by to tell you what they recommend, so I went a la carte with that in mind too.

The otoshi that arrived with the beer.
Rather large for an otoshi lol Chawanmushi and simmered fish trimmings.

One has to eat the Kindai tuna, after all! So: an assorted sashimi plate of their farmed fish.
The fact that it comes with a graduation certificate is rather funny ^^ What I ordered this time was the two-person portion. It is a six-piece assortment: lean, chutoro and otoro? of Kindai-graduate tuna, plus striped jack and yellowtail I suppose? And sea bream or thereabouts. A steady deliciousness that comes precisely from being farmed. Fresh and glistening, and as sashimi it is superb! I hope farming gets easier still and the prices come down.

It was billed as the namero of the day, and as it happened to be tuna I ordered it.
One thinks of horse mackerel for this, so doing it with tuna is quite the luxury! Delicious, of course.

Around here a member of staff suggested a sake tasting flight.
A flight of Kid, a sake from Kishu Wakayama — junmai, junmai ginjo and junmai daiginjo (1,400 yen).
It suits fish, does it not. Delicious!

This grilled kama was recommended too, and is limited in number. It is quite large, and extremely rich in fat and delicious!
Even with soy sauce, grated daikon and lemon, the fat keeps welling up, so you feel it lol There is plenty of meat on it as well and it is very generous. Since it is limited in number, I feel you should order it if it is available!

I wanted something other than fish for a moment and strayed to the chicken karaage ^^
After all that fish, slipping in some karaage was delicious beyond words. Juicy, with tender meat, and very good!
Around here I was full, so out we went! Satisfied!
I had never quite managed to come until now, so I am glad to have finally eaten the Kindai farmed fish! There is no this-or-that about it being farmed — every fish was simply very good! Tuna is expensive, after all. It would be lovely if farming high-grade fish like this succeeded and they became cheap and easy to eat. Why not give it a try once?!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
