Kirakira Crepe, Oarai: They Built a Tank Out of a Crepe

A note on the words: Oarai is a seaside town in Ibaraki that serves as the setting of the animated series Girls und Panzer, which is why its tanks turn up on a crepe menu; Toppo is a chocolate-filled biscuit stick, standing in here for the gun barrel. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

I want to eat something good today as well. This is Hangover Meshi.

On the way back from Oarai I thought I might pick up a souvenir, and went into a souvenir shop near the Oarai Marine Tower.

Next door to it was a crepe stand, so: something sweet.

And then I found something interesting on the menu.

Kirakira Crepe
That is right — Oarai is the town of tanks.

A tank crepe. Of course — this is the holy ground of Girls und Panzer.

Is the standard of these not rather high? A Maus crepe, no less.

Crisp and fluffy, and the sea breeze makes it taste better

Anyway, crepe ordered, let us get on with it.

Tank Crepe No. 1 (800 yen)

Tank Crepe No. 1 (800 yen)

Look at this.

Strawberries stand in for the tracks and the turret, the hull is some sort of brownie-ish thing, and the gun barrel is a Toppo stick. All of it joined together with a great deal of cream. The likeness is oddly good! The longer you look at it, the more charming it becomes.

Eating it, well, it is a fairly ordinary crepe — but something sweet eaten in a fresh sea breeze is good.

The marshmallow crepe!

You can choose chocolate or caramel sauce; I took the chocolate. With coloured sprinkles over it, it looks rather sweet in both senses. And with two marshmallows planted on top, it certainly promised to be very sugary indeed.

Thank you for the meal!

A tank-shaped crepe in the town of tanks — a good memory of a day out in Oarai. If you are in the area, do drop in.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
