Harvest Table, Harmonyland: Chilled Soy Milk Tantan Udon, and a Beer Inside a Sanrio Park

A note on the words: Harmonyland is Sanrio’s outdoor theme park in Oita, where characters such as Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, and Gudetama appear in shows and across the menu. Chilled soy milk tantan udon is cold udon noodles in a creamy broth made from soy milk, roasted sesame, and spicy chili oil, decorated here with themed character wafers. Hamburg steak with demi-glace, called hambagu in Japan, is a savory ground meat patty glazed in rich brown sauce, and omurice is seasoned ketchup fried rice topped with an omelet, fashioned in this dish into a reclining Gudetama resting beneath a bacon blanket.

Harvest Table

Harvest Table on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello Kyushu, thanks for waiting. It’s Hangover Meshi time (meshi means meal)!

Having traveled all the way to Oita, there was one place I especially wanted to stop by: Harmonyland! Sanrio’s outdoor theme park. After running around under the sweltering heat, we headed for lunch at a restaurant inside the park. It was packed, but you can wait in the virtual queue online and simply show up when your number is called — a very user-friendly system.

Harvest Table

Just as you would expect from a Sanrio restaurant, characters are everywhere you look.

Nearly everything on the menu is inspired by character motifs, and it is unbelievably cute!

With seasonal items like chilled tantan udon on offer, we deliberated over the menu and ordered a spread to share.

Chilled Tantan Is an Excuse for Daytime Beer

Now, after all that running around in the heat, let’s have a drink!

Chilled Tantan Is an Excuse for Daytime Beer
Never expected to be able to drink inside the park, so I was thrilled, ha

Beer!

Phew! Brings you right back to life!

When the dishes were ready, the server that brought them over was a feline robot I had definitely seen somewhere before.

That would be me… ha

Ah, so perhaps this restaurant belongs to the Gusto family — Gusto being a Japanese family-restaurant chain.

Chilled Soy Milk Tantan Udon (1,700 yen)

Chilled Soy Milk Tantan Udon (1,700 yen)

One of the limited-time specials this time: chilled soy milk tantan udon.

The monaka wafer or puff featuring a sun-tanned Dear Daniel and Hello Kitty is adorable… though I wonder what on earth they printed it on? You can eat it, including the palm tree, ha. With all the colors, it gives off total tropical island vibes! The seared Hello Kitty branding on the chashu pork is wonderfully detailed too!

The broth is quite red. Taking a spoonful, sesame aroma rises first, immediately followed by the fragrance of chili oil. In the mouth, the creamy smoothness of soy milk arrives first, the nutty richness of sesame spreads gently, and a spicy kick trails behind. The spice is mild, but you definitely feel it, so those sensitive to heat should be mindful.

The udon noodles are smooth and glossy, lifting the chilled broth nicely. Given how sweltering it is outside, the combo of chilled tantan udon and beer is just the ticket to cool down! The tomato, apparently from Oita, is cut into generous wedges. Toppings like okra and baby corn are peak summer ingredients and delicious! It is scorching outside, so on that merit alone, I highly recommend it.

Pompompurin 30th Anniversary Curry (1,700 yen)

Pompompurin 30th Anniversary Curry (1,700 yen)
Looking up at it from an angle gives the face a three-dimensional depth that is slightly creepy, ha

Since we ordered several dishes to share, I tried this one too.

A delicate layer of crepe-thin egg draped softly over white rice forms Pompompurin’s face. The brown beret, the ribbon, and the round 30th-anniversary wafer are all arranged on top — almost too cute to break apart. The curry is completely mild and sweet. With aromatic spices and a rich, velvety texture, it feels almost like hotel-style curry. Karaage and a bone-in sausage come alongside, making it pleasantly hearty!

Gudetama Hamburg Steak with Demi-Glace & Omurice (1,650 yen)

Gudetama Hamburg Steak with Demi-Glace & Omurice (1,650 yen)

This one was the most voluminous of all! In a dark, glossy sea of demi-glace sits an island of ketchup rice. A thin-omelet Gudetama (it is just a face drawn on, yet absurdly cute, ha) lies sprawled out with a slice of bacon draped over him like a blanket. The fidelity of this bacon blanket is just brilliant, ha.

The demi-glace is visibly dark, leaning toward roasted bitterness and richness rather than sweetness. The character dishes here generally have bold, well-defined seasoning that feels surprisingly geared toward adults! Plenty of older fans visit, after all. With fried sides on the plate, it paired perfectly with beer! (I ended up ordering another bottle, ha). The hamburg steak was juicy and tender, the croquette had a crunchy shell. Delicious as well!

Thank you for the meal!

When you go to a theme park, you want to immerse yourself completely in that world! Every single character dish is adorable and photogenic, yet packed with genuine, solid flavor. Maybe it really is in the Gusto family after all.

Since it is an outdoor park, the summer heat is intense! Air-conditioned spots to dine are limited, so if you plan on eating here, you would do well to join the online virtual queue early!

*To join the virtual queue, you need to scan the QR code located in front of the restaurant, so be sure to stop by once!

May you encounter delicious food today too!
