Azabu Kougaiken, Hiroo: The Yoshoku Dream Plate

A note on the words: yoshoku is Japanese-style Western food — the dishes Japan built its own versions of from the Meiji era onward. Hamburg steak is a seasoned ground beef patty served without a bun, usually under demi-glace. Omurice is fried rice wrapped in a thin omelet. Hiroo is a quiet, well-off neighborhood between Ebisu and Roppongi. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Azabu Kougaiken Hiroo on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. I have wanted to come here for ages!! Kougaiken!!
My appetite for yoshoku has been running unreasonably high lately. I want to eat good yoshoku! — and so to Kougaiken, which I have had my eye on for a long time.
There are branches in Nakameguro, Ikebukuro and Kudanshita as well, but if you are going to Kougaiken it has to be the Hiroo main branch first!!

I booked, but on a weekday it does not seem especially hard to get in.

I envy anyone who lives close by!
It is just about walkable, but honestly a bit far lol
From Hiroo Station you walk a little way toward Nishi-Azabu.

Whoaaaa!
There are so many things I want to eat!!! And that is only a fraction of it.
How is one supposed to choose? The plates let you have a little of each of the popular dishes.
But the hamburg steak is hard to give up. And I want curry too.
A yoshoku steak would be wonderful as well. Ginger pork, beef stew, and I would like to try the spaghetti with meat sauce at least once, precisely because it is the obvious choice… If I lived next door I could eat something different every day and be happy lol lol lol

After a great deal of dithering, I built the order around the yoshoku plate.

Yoshoku plate (2,700 yen)

Since I had come to a proper yoshoku restaurant, a glass of white wine first.

Salad! They did tell me that each plate comes with a little salad on it.
But you can never have too many vegetables. And they kindly said they would change the dressing for me, which was lovely.

Kougaiken salad (1,500 yen)

Is this a carrot dressing? Whatever it is, it is good.

And here is the yoshoku plate!!!!
Whoaaa! Hamburg steak and fried shrimp, and the yolk on the fried egg is bulging lol
A plate out of a dream. It looks wonderful!

First, without breaking the egg, a mouthful of the hamburg steak.
Mmm, delicious. A carefully made hamburg steak, standard and faintly nostalgic, under a rich demi-glace. The summit of the standard hamburg steak, you might say. Breaking the egg and eating it with the rich yolk is delicious too, and this is far too much happiness! The fried shrimp is a large one. It has real presence. One bite and it is crisp outside, springy within, and softer still at the center. Sweet shrimp! Delicious. And it goes with the tartar sauce!!!!

And this is the yoshoku shop’s dream plate.
Omurice is the centerpiece, under demi-glace, and this looks wonderful too.
Besides the fried shrimp there is a crab cream croquette. We shared both the hamburg steak from the yoshoku plate and the omurice from this dream plate, and the omurice was superb. The demi-glace is so good it is unbearable! I wish I could eat more!!!

Basque brulee (800 yen)

Basque brulee (800 yen)

I thought I was quite full already, but the blackboard on the wall said: in-store only! Basque brulee! It was presented as something like a Hiroo-branch exclusive, which made me curious, so I ordered one. Along with another glass of wine lol Crisp outside, sweet within!! There is a fair amount of sweetness but it comes across as rounded, which is a fine thing. The caramelized note is wonderful too, and it was delicious!

Thank you for the meal!

Kougaiken in Hiroo, which I had wanted to visit for so long, and thoroughly satisfying! A properly orthodox yoshoku restaurant. The room is stylish too, and I would like to live the kind of life where you eat dinner somewhere like this every day. I do not think you would tire of it. There are so many dishes I did not manage to eat this time, so I must go back!!! It was delicious. Recommended!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
