Nyonyogo, Oku-Shibuya: A Bar Built on Garlic

A note on the words: a bar of this kind, called a baru in Japanese after the Spanish, serves small plates meant to be eaten standing or perched at a counter. Fukuchi White Rokuboku is a premium garlic variety grown in Aomori, in the far north of Honshu. Oku-Shibuya is the quieter stretch of streets north-west of Shibuya, toward Yoyogi-Koen. Otoshi is the small dish you are served and charged for on sitting down, which is not a scam but the cover charge. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Hi, this is Hangover Meshi. This time I went to a garlic specialty shop in Oku-Shibuya called Garlic Bar Nyonyogo! I really love garlic, but outside of eating it raw alongside Jiro-style ramen, I do not think I have had it as an actual cooked dish very often. Since this is a specialty shop, I braced myself for smelling of garlic afterward and went in to enjoy it properly.

Garlic Bar Nyonyogo

Apparently they use a top-grade garlic called Fukuchi White Rokuboku, which is said to leave less lingering smell than usual!

Garlic Bar Nyonyogo

Looking at the menu, there is an enormous number of garlic dishes on it!
Everything looked delicious, so we decided to just order whatever we felt like eating, one after another.

A la carte

First, a drink!
It turns out they have a garlic-based drink lol Is it actually good, I wondered.

Garlic craft lemon sour (680 yen)

Garlic craft lemon sour (680 yen)

A garlic lemon sour lol
They offered us the bottle behind it — garlic steeped in alcohol — if we wanted a photo!
I imagine this is what gets mixed with lemon^^ I took a sip and the smell of garlic hit hard lol
Is it actually good? Asked outright, the answer is genuinely uncertain lol But you definitely get the full garlic experience, so as an experience, it is a good one!

Whole roasted Nyonyogo garlic (780 yen)

Whole roasted Nyonyogo garlic (780 yen)

Whole roasted garlic! I was thinking peeling this would be a hassle, but as it turns out, they just bring it over to show you first, then take it back and peel it for you before serving! This shop is really something, isn’t it!

Whole roasted Nyonyogo garlic (780 yen)

A while later they brought over the peeled garlic! Really excellent service!
As for the roasted garlic itself, it is cooked through slowly until soft and delicious.

You spread it on crackers yourself! The garlic-shaped dish is cute, and it comes with black garlic too.

Whelk cooked in garlic Burgundy butter (1,080 yen)

Whelk cooked in garlic Burgundy butter (1,080 yen)

Whelk cooked in garlic butter! Served in an escargot dish^^ Garlic, butter and shellfish are never going to be a bad combination. It comes with baguette too, and piling it on top is extremely good. I wanted to eat more of this!

House garlic shumai (680 yen)

House garlic shumai (680 yen)

House garlic shumai! They brought it with garlic-leaf soy sauce on the side too. Dipping it in that is also delicious.

Black Angus beef harami garlic steak (1,780 yen)

Beef harami! This meat is tender and delicious. It comes piled with a huge amount of garlic chips, and the pairing is unquestionably a good one.
An experience of drowning in garlic aroma lol Extremely delicious.

Seasonal sashimi carpaccio (1,080 yen)

A carpaccio topped with two kinds of garlic sauce.
I wondered whether garlic really goes with raw fish, but it does, properly. The acidity and the garlic work well together!

Super garlic guilty peperoncino (1,980 yen)

Super garlic guilty peperoncino (1,980 yen)

Last, chosen purely for the name, the super garlic guilty peperoncino lol
I like that they are clearly committing to the bit here! Garlic butter, garlic oil, minced garlic, grated garlic, raw garlic — every form of garlic imaginable goes into this peperoncino lol Apparently what is piled on top is garlic paste. By this point things have gotten fairly extreme, but interestingly enough, past a certain amount, adding more garlic does not really change the flavor further.
Taking a bite, the garlic flavor is intense, but the peperoncino is seasoned on the sweeter side. I found myself thinking it might have been better with a sharper kick of chili heat — though maybe that sweetness is actually coming from the garlic itself.

It was an interesting experience, but since it leans quite sweet, I think it will split people’s preferences^^

Thank you for the meal!

So, we thoroughly drowned ourselves in garlic, and I left very satisfied. It was all garlic dishes, so there were a few that might land as hit-or-miss depending on your taste, but every one of them was a first-time experience and interesting for it. And it really does seem to be true that the smell lingers less than usual (though I suppose I might just not have noticed myself lol). You come away feeling light, which I liked. On top of that, the staff were all wonderfully friendly. On service alone, I would give it full marks. A really good shop!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
