A note on the words: Hamamatsu gyoza are pan-fried dumplings typically arranged in a circular wheel (kuruma-mori) with bean sprouts piled in the center. Sui-gyoza are boiled dumplings served in a light broth, while miso horumon is offal in a savory fermented soybean paste. A lemon sour is a popular Japanese citrus highball. In this meal, the classic pan-fried wheel plate is shared alongside boiled dumplings, offal, and drinks.

Ishimatsu Gyoza JR Hamamatsu Station on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Shizuoka Prefecture! Hamamatsu! When you think of Hamamatsu, eel and gyoza are what come to mind, I suppose. Eel I will get to separately, time; first up was a drink to mark a safe arrival alongside gyoza at “Ishimatsu Gyoza”, right inside the station! The restaurant is located at the back of the souvenir shop zone, and there was a line…! Apparently everyone thinks alike — there were around 10 people in line, but figuring turnover wouldn’t be too slow with gyoza, I decided to join the queue.

While queuing, I looked over the menu to pick out what I wanted.
You place your full initial order when entering, but it was a relief to know you can order more from inside too!
Ishimatsu gyoza set meal — 1,030 yen
Yaki-yaki set meal — 1,220 yen
Yaki-sui set meal — 1,220 yen
Kuruma-mori — 1,530 yen
Miso horumon — 600 yen

When you think of Hamamatsu gyoza, kuruma-mori is the obvious choice!
It’s that classic style laid out in a ring with bean sprouts in the middle, and apparently Ishimatsu Gyoza was the one that started putting the bean sprouts there.
For now, we decided to order with kuruma-mori as the center.

This had to be first! So we started with the kuruma-mori.
Taking a bite… Delicious!
Crisp and juicy gyoza, the meat seeming to be ground remarkably fine. There are plenty of vegetables as well, lending a natural sweetness that makes it outstandingly good.
The sauce has a bright acidity that pairs wonderfully with the sweetness of the meat and vegetables.
The kuruma-mori looks like quite a large portion, but between the three of us it vanished in an instant.

Ordered as a snack for drinks: miso horumon.
Richly seasoned offal, this is absolutely the perfect accompaniment for alcohol!

A set of Ishimatsu gyoza and meat gyoza.
The meat gyoza has nira (garlic chives) and green onions in it, giving it a punchier flavor than regular Ishimatsu gyoza.
I feel it tastes closer to conventional gyoza, if anything. Delicious.

Having come this far, we decided to go for sui-gyoza as well and placed an order!
These dumplings are wonderfully chewy with great texture! The soup has a gentle feel that seeps right through you, making it a great pairing with drinks too!
And so, pairing a rush of gyoza with punch lemon sours made for pure bliss! There certainly was a line, but with plenty of seats and fast turnover for gyoza, the line clears surprisingly quickly. If you have come all the way to Hamamatsu, why not wait it out and give the original Ishimatsu Gyoza a try!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
