Yakiniku Tecchan, Monzen-nakacho: Grilled Meat at Lunchtime, With Beer

A note on the words: yakiniku is Japanese tabletop barbecue, with cuts like harami (skirt steak, tender and deeply savory) and karubi (beef short rib). Tan refers to beef tongue, namul are seasoned vegetable side dishes, and chijimi is a Korean savory pancake often made with seafood. In this casual daytime lunch, beer and namul set the table before grilling cuts of skirt steak and short rib alongside a seafood pancake.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Wandering around Monzen-nakacho, looking for a spot where I could have a casual daytime drink over lunch, I found one! “Nadai! Monnaka Yakiniku Tecchan” — figuring yakiniku at lunchtime once in a while is no bad thing, I stepped inside. The place sits right along the main road just outside Monzen-nakacho Station. There is a river flowing right nearby around here too, isn’t there. I have no idea which river it is — a branch of the Sumida, maybe??

There was a blackboard by the entrance with all sorts of dishes listed, which built up anticipation.

First, namul alongside the beer. Having this and kimchi on the table always gives a reassuring feeling.

Here they are! Time to get grilling right away.

Harami (1,080 yen) and karubi (1,080 yen)

Tasting them, delicious! The harami has a solid, concentrated beef flavor.
It feels like a standard, ordinary cut of skirt steak,
but it is well marinated in sauce and very tender. Boldly flavored meat like this makes the ideal snack for drinks.

Grilling up the karubi next.

Harami (1,080 yen) and karubi (1,080 yen)

It’s cut quite thick into bar-like strips. Loaded with fat, it would go great with rice too!
When having casual yakiniku to pair with drinks, this kind of cut is really all you need!

Seafood chijimi (1,280 yen)

Seafood chijimi (1,280 yen)

Generously loaded with ingredients, and delicious!
The aroma of sesame oil and the tangy sauce pair wonderfully with the seafood!

Thank you for the meal!

And so, it was just the right kind of yakiniku joint to drop into for lunch. The interior was pretty cluttered, but that is part of its charm. Perhaps that homey atmosphere is what makes it work.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
