A note on the words: yakiniku is grilling your own meat over a burner set into the table. Yukke is raw seasoned beef, mino the cow’s first stomach and giara its fourth, both cuts grilled as offal. Rosu means loin, and mille-feuille loin describes the thin slices stacked in layers. Negi-dare is a sauce of chopped scallion, and otoshi is the small dish you are served and charged for on sitting down, which is not a scam but the cover charge. Mitarashi is the sweet soy glaze usually poured over rice dumplings. Kagurazaka is a hillside neighborhood of narrow stone lanes near Iidabashi. One link in this article goes to a Japanese-only article. Horumon means the offal cuts grilled at a Japanese table — tripe, intestine, heart and the rest. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Tendan Kagurazaka on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
So, this is Hangover Meshi. I got dragged along to “Tendan” in Kagurazaka because someone had a discount coupon. There’s a branch in Akasaka I go to for lunch fairly often, but this might be the first time I’ve properly gone for dinner. The far end of Kagurazaka has this stylish cobblestone-paved feel to it! We took the elevator up — the entrance is on the 3rd floor. It gives off a rather upscale atmosphere!

You order via touchscreen, which is nice — no need to feel awkward about calling the staff over!
So we just went ahead and tapped through whatever we felt like.
Beer! The glass is tiny elegant!!!^^

Water kimchi as the otoshi.
Water kimchi??? I thought — but drinking it, it really does taste like kimchi lol I had no idea such a thing existed.

Argh, the portion is so refined lol Is 1,200 yen worth it for this? You decide!

Quite a price on this one! Thick-cut tongue. 3,500 yen for two slices. But it’s a proper thick cut and looks delicious^^

Mmm, looks great! Careful not to overcook it — snip it with the scissors, dip it in the negi-dare (scallion sauce), and take a bite.
Delicious!!! Tender, with rich meaty juices bursting out. This is good tongue. Really good.

Hmm…

In it goes — mixing the runny yolk all through. Delicious, of course.

Ohhh, this looks amazing!
This one, apparently, they’ll grill for you, so I asked them to^^

Dipping it in this dashi broth is so good. I don’t know quite why, but it sheds the excess fat and makes it easier to eat!
Maybe I’m just appreciating this more as I get older lol

Kalbi with incredible marbling.
The moment it hit the grill, the flames shot up^^ I’d just been draining off the fat with dashi, and here I am chasing more fat with kalbi. Zero consistency, I know — but you want what you want! That sweet fat is so good!

I have a feeling this might be misuji — but either way, this was delicious too!

We’d been talking about the boiled tongue at Tanyaki Shinobu in Yotsuya (in Japanese),
and it turned out they had something similar on the menu here, so we said “this is it!” and ordered it lol Simmered until tender and delicious!!

Both the beef tendon and the simmered tongue feel like a real bargain. At 400 yen, that’s completely fair! And they’re delicious, so the drinks keep coming!

To finish, we slow-grilled some horumon while we kept drinking!
Somewhere around here I switched to shochu with soda and kept the drinks coming. Ahh, so good!

Dessert! Mitarashi ice cream lol Surprisingly good.
This was my first time at Tendan for dinner, and my, how refined! The portions, I mean lol Still, there’s no doubt it’s delicious, so I’d recommend going for lunch once first, and if you find yourself thinking “I love this dashi-style yakiniku,” come back for dinner. It is on the pricier side, sure, but the space is relaxed enough for a proper unhurried conversation, and I think that’s worth it. It felt like a restaurant that suits Kagurazaka’s pleasant atmosphere well.

Tabelog dinner rating ★★★☆☆ 3.5
I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
