A note on the words: yakiniku is Japanese barbecue, where the meat comes raw and you grill it yourself at the table. Hakata is the old merchant quarter of Fukuoka, down in Kyushu, and this shop cooks in that city’s style: the meat is steeped in a chili tare, a sweet and savory soy marinade, before it goes on the grill, and you choose how hot you want it. Kalbi is short rib, harami is skirt steak, and mino is the first stomach of the cow, eaten for its crunch. Kakigori is shaved ice piled high and poured over with syrup. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Book a table at Hakata Yakiniku Genpukan Ryu on AutoReserve (English)
Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. This time, back to Hakata Yakiniku Genpukan Ryu after a long gap! It is a yakiniku restaurant from Hakata, and there is a branch here in Roppongi as well. Last time I came away thinking how good it was, and then never went back, so it was high time. When the weather turns hot, spicy yakiniku really is the thing! Once again out on the terrace, feeling the heat, with beer and hot grilled meat! It happened to rain that day, but the terrace has a roof over it, so it was no trouble at all^^

Right — time to eat! We ordered more or less at random.

Straight to the tare-yaki, meat steeped in the house sauce and grilled! There are several levels of heat:
mild, sweet-hot, standard hot, Chiyo hot, and extra hot lol
Chiyo hot is the same flavor as the main shop, so Chiyo it had to be! Chiyo hot it was!

This is it! Grilled meat under a heap of chili seeds. That looks good!

Harami, the skirt, not to be forgotten. Everything here is tare-yaki, so the seasoning is the same throughout, but harami and kalbi come out quite different in texture. If pressed, I think I prefer the harami: the heat lands cleaner on it^^

Salted tongue buried under scallions.
It struck me that we had gone straight for the tare-yaki and never ordered tongue at all! So I ordered it^^

Grill one side well, roll it up, and in it goes! Plenty of scallions, and delicious!

Premium mino tripe in the tare. That tare really is good. The crunch of mino and this heat go together better than you would expect.
As something to drink with, there may be nothing better. Hot and delicious! I am getting used to Chiyo. I might manage the extra hot next time lol

Liver as well. Cubed liver! Cut into neat rectangles. Well steeped in the hot tare, and very good.
It is all the same seasoning, mind you lol but each cut has its own texture and flavor, so you never tire of it. That is down to how good the tare is.

Full of meat, but we had eaten no vegetables at all! So we ordered the grilled vegetables as well.
They could have steeped these in the hot tare too lol

And to finish, it has to be this! The dragon kakigori! An enormous mound of shaved ice — but after sitting out on the terrace eating hot grilled meat all evening, you are warm! Cooling the body down with this at the end feels wonderful. Three flavors: strawberry milk, tiramisu, and caramel nut. This one, for the record, is tiramisu!
Thoroughly satisfied. Hot grilled meat eaten while breaking a sweat is the best there is! I have grown rather used to Chiyo, so next time the extra hot may genuinely be in order. Spicy yakiniku out in the heat, beer alongside, and shaved ice to close — what could be better! The outdoor seats are well worth it at this time of year, so why not ask for one in the notes when you book?^^
