Yamane Ya, Akasaka: The Set-Meal Shop Went Fully Cashless, and It Suits It

A note on the words: teishoku is a set meal served on a tray with rice, miso soup, and small side dishes. Oni-oroshi is coarsely grated daikon radish that retains a crisp, crunchy bite, served here alongside salt-grilled mackerel. Karaage is Japanese bite-sized fried chicken, and tare is a thick, sweet-savory seasoned basting sauce.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Akasaka Gohan Yamane Ya is a wonderful teishoku eatery in Akasaka where the sashimi set was so delicious when I visited previously. Hearing that it has been getting popular recently reminded me of it, so I decided to pay another visit. It sits at the base of Sanpun-zaka slope. Stepping inside, it had undergone an unexpected evolution, ha: an automated ticket machine was installed, and before I knew it, the shop had turned into a fully cashless establishment.

Now that is a fantastic evolution! The entire world might as well go cashless. They accept a broad range of options, from barcode payments to transit IC cards and credit cards, so hardly anyone should be inconvenienced. It seems like the system automatically sends the order to the kitchen as soon as you purchase your ticket. Excellent stuff.

Has the menu expanded a bit? I wonder.
Wrestling with what to get this time, since I had sashimi on my previous visit, I decided on the salt-grilled mackerel set, deboned. A large serving of rice was 0 yen, so I went ahead and asked for that as well. Honestly, having to ask out loud for extra rice can be a bit awkward, so doing it through a ticket machine is just right! Truly wonderful of this restaurant.

Two fillets of salt-grilled mackerel alongside oni-oroshi, coarsely grated daikon. They are quite large.
Starting with the mackerel, the bones have been cleanly removed, making it wonderfully easy to eat! On top of that, it is piping-hot, juicy, and delicious. Ah, it has been a while since I had grilled fish — so good. Well, if pressed, I felt like I could have used a touch more soy sauce, but that is fine! Keeping salt intake down is much better for you anyway! If anything, not leaving soy sauce out on the tables feels like a thoughtful kindness.

And then these small side dishes. Yes, exactly — this is what you come here wanting to eat! A pure detox!

The rice is delicious too! A proper large bowl that brings a smile!

I was given one piece of karaage: large and fried crisp, paired with a sweet-savory tare sauce that has a gentle tang. Delicious!

Thank you for the meal!

A wholesome, delicious Japanese teishoku meal that feels great for the body, as always. Really wonderful. It seems to have become quite popular indeed, as it was packed. Being fully cashless is just fantastic, though. You only need your phone — no wallet required — making it the exact kind of place you want to drop into casually at lunch!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
