Ayanokoji, Nogizaka: Sirloin Into the Egg

A note on the words: yakiniku is the Japanese way of grilling bite-sized cuts of beef over a charcoal grill set into your own table, most of it cooked by the diners themselves. Tan is beef tongue, kalbi is short rib, harami is the outside skirt, and joh or “premium” marks the better grade of a cut. Gokuyaki is written with the characters for “ultimate” and “grilled.” Namul are Korean seasoned vegetable side dishes, served in small piles alongside kimchi. Shijimi are the small dark freshwater clams used for a clear soup that Japanese drinkers reach for after a night out. Yakimeshi is fried rice, and shime is the closing dish of a drinking evening, usually rice or noodles. Hakushu is a Japanese single malt whisky, and a highball is whisky lengthened with soda over ice. Hangover Meshi is the name of this blog, and meshi means a meal.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Dinner this time is “Yakiniku Ayanokoji,” in Nogizaka, on the way from Midtown toward the National Art Center. Apparently every room here is a private room, so I am looking forward to it! The entrance looks like this.

Kimchi and namul assortment

The standard pairing. About a mouthful of each, which as far as volume goes came out just right.
The napa cabbage was quite crisp, still in a lightly pickled state, and it was good.

Shijimi clam soup. The comforting sort of good. I have been drinking a fair amount, so it lands just right.

Thank you for the meal!

With as many as nine dishes you do end up quite full. That said, both the taste and the volume were thoroughly satisfying! And being in a private room, so you can eat at your own pace, is nice as well. It costs a fair bit, so I cannot come very often, ha, but once in a while a yakiniku dinner somewhere like this might be just the thing.

Tabelog dinner rating ★★★☆☆ 3.5

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
