A note on the words: European-style curry, or oufuu curry, is a Japanese category rather than a European one, a dark curry built like a long-simmered French stew and much thicker than the Indian sort; soup curry is the other Japanese branch, thin and brothy, served with the rice on the side so you spoon one into the other. Doria, mentioned at the end, is rice baked under cheese in the dish. Takaracho is a quiet office district one stop from Ginza, and this shop sits in a basement there. Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. A famous curry shop in Takaracho, near Kyobashi! I had wanted to go for ages. I looked in at lunch once and gave up at the sight of the line, but in the evening it might be possible — so I booked and went! I had not taken much notice in daylight, but the front of the shop is charming.
Down the stairs, and the inside is charming as well! Or rather, it does not feel like a curry shop at all lol
More like a smart bar, or an old-fashioned coffee house^^
Baked cheese beef curry: 1,750 yen
Seafood curry: 2,100 yen
They told me, apologetically, that all they had was the English menu — but there are only two dishes, so it hardly mattered.
We ordered one of each. The seafood curry was the last one going! Lucky.
You choose the heat, from 1 to 3!
First, something to drink. A Chimay Blue to go with the curry.
Then the salad arrives.
The dressing comes on the side.
And the salad itself is generous! Pour the dressing over and dig in.
Chopsticks are laid out, which is a quiet kindness — it makes the thing much easier to eat.
It arrives bubbling audibly, and the sight of it alone is something. It looks hot!
One mouthful, and it is exactly as good as it looks!
I went with level 2, medium. A European-style curry with a real spice kick to it, tangled up in mozzarella that has been browned on top and gone molten, rich but with a finish that is unexpectedly clean. Every time you blow on a spoonful and taste it, the natural sweetness of the onion and the vegetables sits in perfect balance against the prickle of heat, and the toasted smell of the cheese fills your mouth. The beef has been simmered until it falls apart, quiet in the dish but adding a deep savory note, and it stays hot to the last bite, which is another mark in its favor. No wonder people line up. Delicious.
Well now. What a smell. This one comes bubbling hot as well.
As you can see, it is a European-style soup curry, loaded with ingredients and deeply savory. A rich scent of the sea rises gently from the hot iron pot, and the smell alone is enough to win you over. The shrimp, mussels, scallops and squid are all large and worth eating, and the broth they have given their flavor to balances heat and body beautifully. I took level 3, hot, so it has a proper sting to it, yet there is a mildness underneath that lets the sweetness of the seafood come forward. The thin, clear texture particular to soup curry keeps it from feeling heavy, so you enjoy it to the last spoonful. This one is good too.
Lovely! A very fine room, and good curry eaten briskly. It is not a place to linger, but with the classical music and the general air of it, I felt I had spent an unhurried hour. The baked curry in full doria style is good, and so is the soup curry with rice alongside. Both are excellent, so it is a good shop to have: you can pick whichever suits your mood.
