A note on the words: an izakaya is a Japanese pub, where you drink and order small plates rather than sitting down to one main course. Soup curry is a soupy, spice-forward style of Japanese curry served with rice on the side to dunk, associated with Hokkaido, the northern island. Furano is a town on that island. Myoga is Japanese ginger bud, a pink, crunchy, aromatic shoot usually served raw or lightly pickled. Miso is fermented soybean paste. Asari are small Japanese clams. A lemon sour is shochu with soda and lemon, one of the standard drinks in a place like this; a hop sour is the same idea made with a hop-flavored mixer.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. This time I came to Kiryu, an izakaya (Japanese pub) in Ebisu. There is a place called Ebisu Wagao on the first floor here, ha, and its sign is so big that Wagao is all that registers, so I had never even noticed this place existed. Turns out someone told me the soup curry here is delicious, so: let us go once! And up the stairs to the second floor I went.
The handwritten, brightly colored menus and the cluttered feel of the room give off a serious subculture vibe. ^^
Lightly pickled myoga and cucumber, eaten with curry miso.
Nice glossy sheen on it. I like myoga, so this made me happy!
There was something called a Furano hop sour on the menu, so I went to order it — sadly, sold out!
Furano, soup curry… is this a Hokkaido-leaning place, I wonder?
So I ordered a lemon sour, and with it, the curry.
Looks sooo goood!
The moment it arrived, a rich waft of spice tickled my nose. Asari clams, eggplant, egg, spinach and more — loaded with ingredients.
One sip of the soup and there it is: deep body and savor carrying the spice. Delicious.
Scooping up the rice and dunking it in the soup is delicious too!
This one is tofu, bean sprouts, garlic scapes and meat, stir-fried.
Pretty substantial and tasty! Just right as something to drink alongside, too.
I got to the place fairly late, but I drank properly right up to the last train and headed home!
It still looked like they were open, so they may well run quite deep into the night.
I had no idea about this place at all, but the soup curry and the small plates are seriously good! Thinking it could work well as an everyday spot, and since it does seem to stay open late, if the plan is “until the last train” or thereabouts, this might be a place I would use actively! Next time maybe I will come when the Furano hop sour is in stock!
