A note on the words: katsu is meat breaded in panko and deep-fried; tonkatsu is the pork version. Omu-katsu is katsu served with a thin omelet over rice. Moshio is salt made by the old Japanese method of boiling down seawater with seaweed. Meat Yazawa is a well-known Tokyo beef restaurant group. Matsunoya and Katsuya are national katsu chains. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Yazawa Chicken Tokyo Midtown on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
I want to eat something good today too. This is Hangover Meshi. This time, a new place that has opened in Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi: Yazawa Chicken, for chicken katsu. It is part of the Meat Yazawa group. A chicken katsu shop from a famous butcher, so I am looking forward to it. It has been a while since anything new opened in Midtown. It has opened where there used to be a Chinese, or perhaps Hong Kong, restaurant. Off to Midtown at once.

A clean, brand-new shop. You order at the ticket machine to the left of the entrance and sit wherever you like.
Ticket machines make the operation faster, which is better. I always think so.
Yazawa plate, single, from 1,480 yen
Yazawa plate, combo, from 1,480 yen
Yazawa plate, triple, from 1,880 yen
Yazawa plate, MIX, from 1,880 yen
Omu-katsu bowl, from 1,680 yen
Yazawa katsu curry, from 1,680 yen
For the chicken, the price changes with what you put on it — single, combo, triple and so on. And since you can choose your cut from fillet katsu, breast katsu or thigh katsu, picking the cut you like is fun as well. Hmm, which to have. Hard to decide. Then there is the omu-katsu bowl and the katsu curry too, which does not help. This time I purely wanted to eat chicken katsu, so I chose the Yazawa plate combo.
I asked for a small portion of rice ^^ The price does not change.

Plum dressing for the salad, and sauce for the chicken katsu.

Ta-daa.
That looks good.
Small rice, and soup comes with it too.

Ginger sauce, moshio salt and tartar sauce come with the set, so with the katsu sauce on the table that makes four sauces.
Right, let us start with the fillet.
One bite and there is a crisp snap to it. Remarkably crisp. And what surprised me was how tender the fillet meat is. Soft enough that you wonder how they do it. Is this really chicken? How do they get it this soft? Is it a matter of how it is cooked? Chicken tender enough to melt, wrapped in a crisp coating. The moshio salt alone is enough to make it good.
That said, anything with katsu in the name is basically at its best eaten with a sweet, heavily spiced sauce. (In my opinion.)
So I poured the sauce over and ate it with rice. Yes, that is the one.

I tried the breast katsu too, and this is soft enough that you wonder whether it really is breast.
Is it the quality of the meat? Is the cooking method divine? Either way, I may never have eaten chicken katsu this light. If it is this fluffy and this good, I would choose it over an ordinary tonkatsu. It is healthier too. The carrot rapee-like garnish and the potato-salad-like one suit the meat as well. If the salad were free refills this would be unbeatable ^^
(Surely it is not, though.)
Since you have already paid, being able to eat quickly and leave quickly is welcome as well ^^
So, a new place for the first time in a while, and it is a hit. Very good, and chicken katsu of a kind I had not met before. Thoroughly satisfied. I am rather startled by the quality, and it makes me wonder whether chicken katsu at the chains has got this good lately as well — Matsunoya, Katsuya. I want to try those too and find out whether this place is head and shoulders above or whether the world has simply moved on.

Tabelog lunch rating ★★★☆☆ 3.5
I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
