A note on the words: Saint Marc Cafe is a nationwide Japanese cafe chain, best known for its chocolate croissants. Tama-Center is a planned new town out in the western suburbs of Tokyo, and Sanrio Puroland — the indoor Hello Kitty theme park — is the thing most people go there for. So… hot…
Not that I had come for Sanrio Puroland — I had an errand, and it took me all the way out to Tama-Center. (The wide road straight out of the station, Parthenon Ohdori is it? Handsome and generous, but in summer there is no shade whatsoever and it is hell.) I arrived a little ahead of the time I was meeting someone, so I looked round for a cafe to wait in — and there was a Saint Marc.
Simply having somewhere to escape the heat is a joy.
Right: coffee, and while I was at it, THE Hot Dog, American Classic, as well.
I had not had breakfast yet, after all.
So I went to order, and: “Shall I heat it up for you?” Mmm. It is hot out, I said, so as it is would be fine — and: “Ah, we can only serve it heated…”
Then do not ask me!
Honestly.
I do not eat hot dogs much. It may have been a while.
Just as the description says, the bread has a firm, hard texture and takes real chewing. They toast it, so the outside is tightened by the heat and gives way like a shell cracking. The sausage is good too — thick, and the juices come out as you bite. The roast onion and the pickles are good as well. The sweet, toasty note of the onion lays the ground, and the herb-scented sharpness of the pickles sits on top of it very nicely. The sweetness of the ketchup and the keen acidity of the yellow mustard overlap, and it goes down in no time.
Alongside it, an iced Saint Marc blend.
Iced coffee in summer — there is nothing better, is there.
So there I was, crunching through a hot dog, when the person I was waiting for arrived. They ordered a coffee too, we talked a while, and then we left. As an oasis on the already-too-hot Parthenon Ohdori, I think it is a very good spot indeed!
