Zoogunzoo, Shibuya: Australian Food in a Basement, in the One Private Room

A note on the words: tagliata is the Italian way with beef, seared and sliced; confit is meat cooked slowly in its own fat; fritto means fried in batter; and nomihodai, rendered here as free-flowing drinks, is the fixed-price unlimited-drinks arrangement common with Japanese set courses. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

I want to eat something good today as well. This is Hangover Meshi. This time to “Zoogunzoo”, the Australian restaurant in Shibuya near Aoyama Gakuin. A place for Australian and New Zealand wine and food. I have been to Australia, where they do eat kangaroo and crocodile. Perhaps some of that would appear in the course.

Zoogunzoo, Shibuya branch

The restaurant is in a basement. Inside, a room built around wood with something of an Aboriginal feel to it.

Menu highlights

5,000-yen course with free-flowing drinks, 5,000 yen

6,000-yen course with free-flowing drinks, 6,000 yen

7,000-yen course with free-flowing drinks, 7,000 yen

Three courses are laid out, by what is served.

This time we made the drinks three hours and eased off on the food, taking the following course.

[One party only! Private room guaranteed] Six dishes with two meat mains, plus three hours of free-flowing drinks including four wines

As it says, the private room means one party only. Glad we got it!

Australian food in the one private room they have

Private room it may be, but it is a small one. More than four people and it would get rather tight.

Australian macadamia nuts, roasted in the shell

Australian macadamia nuts, roasted in the shell

I think this may be the first time I have seen macadamia nuts still in the shell.

So that is what they look like. And the implement beside them is for cracking them.

It takes a good deal of force, and doing it feels rather alarming — as though fragments might fly.

Inside is the macadamia. Oily and delicious!

Risotto

Risotto

Cheese risotto with a great deal of parmigiano.

As the name says, there is a lot of cheese in this risotto, so it sits heavily.

Chicken thigh confit with garlic

Chicken thigh confit with garlic

Crisp skin, moist within, and the tenderness that only a confit gives.

The herbs and garlic have gone right into the meat, so it is good as it is.

OZ Beef: beef tagliata

OZ Beef: beef tagliata

Aussie beef!

Packed with the firm flavour of meat that says “meat”. Australian beef is good.

It takes a fair amount of chewing, which gives you the feeling of properly eating meat.

Put an Australian red with this and it is superb. Delicious.

Thank you for the meal!

Because we cut back on food to take three hours of drinks, the overall quantity was on the restrained side. (It was quite enough to fill me, though most people might find it a little thin.) Even so, the experience of sitting in a private room talking over a great deal to drink is surely particular to this place. I had entirely forgotten, but you can order a la carte as well, and there were kangaroo and crocodile skewers on the menu. I should have ordered them.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
