A note on the words: sushi set grades run from nami (standard) up through jo, tokujo, and cho-tokujo (extra-top). Aka-ebi is sweet red shrimp, served here with its head deep-fried crisp on request. Hokkigai is surf clam with a firm, chewy bite, shime-saba is vinegar-cured mackerel, and kohada is lightly cured gizzard shad, a Tokyo sushi staple. Engawa is the delicately fatty fin muscle of flounder, and uni is rich sea urchin roe.

Yoshi Sushi Ueno on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Wandering around Ueno, I was thinking about doing a bit of bar-hopping, but figured I should grab some lunch first. Walking around looking, I came across a sushi shop called “Yoshi Sushi Ueno”. Ah, dropping into an ordinary sushi joint once in a while sounded nice, so in I went.

Inside the restaurant, there is a large counter and a spacious tatami seating area behind it.

Nami sushi (standard) — 1,450 yen
Jo sushi (upper grade) — 1,900 yen
Tokujo sushi (top) — 2,500 yen
Cho-tokujo sushi (extra-top) — 3,300 yen
Special — 2,400 yen
Premium — 3,200 yen

Hmm, quite a variety on the menu. But since I had made the trip, I decided to order a la carte and pick whatever I felt like eating.
So I ordered a few things, among which was aka-ebi (red shrimp), and first had them deep-fry the head for me.
Naturally, I ordered a beer as well.

Ooh, quite a sight! By the way, this is for two people, ha!
What we ordered, starting from bottom left: hokkigai (surf clam; 280 yen), ikura (380 yen), uni (sea urchin; 480 yen), shime-saba (vinegar-cured mackerel; 170 yen), engawa (flounder fin; 230 yen), kohada (gizzard shad; 170 yen), maguro (tuna; 280 yen), tai (sea bream; 230 yen), and aka-ebi (red shrimp; 230 yen).
I started with the hokkigai — delicious!
The sushi itself is quite orthodox sushi. As an accompaniment for drinks, it is excellent!
There was no unpleasant odor to the uni either, and it said direct from Toyosu (Tokyo’s central fish market), so they might well be using good quality stuff.
Rare for Ueno, ha — the shrimp and tuna were solidly delicious, and I was quite satisfied!
So while it was just a sushi shop I happened to drop into casually, the meal was thoroughly satisfying.
I had intended just a quick bite before drinking, but the sushi was so tasty that one thing led to another and I ended up drinking quite a bit, ha!
There were quite a few international visitors too and the place was bustling, so it might be a well-recommended spot! It was delicious.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
