Fuji Soba, Akasaka: Chilled Tanuki Soba and a 290-Yen Mini Curry

A note on the words: tanuki soba is buckwheat noodles topped with agedama or tenkasu (crispy bits of fried tempura batter), served hot in broth or chilled with cold soy-dashi sauce, scallions, and wakame seaweed. Mori soba refers to plain chilled noodles served on a strainer with dipping sauce. Japanese curry is a thick, mild, savory stew served over white rice, ordered here as a compact mini side dish to power through a busy workday.

Nadai Fuji Soba Akasaka ten

Nadai Fuji Soba Akasaka ten on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Last time, when I dropped by right after they opened, I made the agonizing blunder of accidentally ordering “udon,” but since I had been eating nothing but onigiri, rice balls, in the mornings lately, I stopped by for soba: “Nadai Fuji Soba Akasaka ten”. Well, not that much time has passed since my previous visit, so nothing has particularly changed, ha.

Well then, when it comes to morning soba, it has to be “tanuki soba,” doesn’t it? And since my lunch that day was completely booked with meetings and I expected I wouldn’t be able to eat, I also added a mini curry. 290 yen! Does it feel a bit expensive overall, perhaps?

Tanuki soba

So after ordering, I waited a bit. The soba shop in front of Mitsuke Station that I used to frequent only took cash, and no note bigger than 1,000 yen!, so I couldn’t go when I didn’t have small change, but it’s great that Fuji Soba takes Suica! Lately it has felt like a hassle to bring a wallet whenever I step out…

Chilled tanuki soba!
First off, the wasabi is generous. Lots of it. When there is too little wasabi it really deflates the mood, you know.
And the scallions and wakame seaweed are spot-on, piled on in generous portions that feel great. But the agedama (tempura flakes) gets a mixed review! These spherical round tempura flakes have no crispness and I am not a big fan of them. Real tenkasu clinging to the soup while staying crisp would be great, though. And the soba noodles felt a bit too soft, I think. The broth is chilled crisp and delicious.

The curry is, well, your classic Japanese curry. It feels somewhat close to retort pouch curry, but it is plenty delicious. Adding the mini curry brings quite a solid volume, easily holding me over even if I skip lunch!

Thank you for the meal!

I gave the soba a proper try, and only the tempura flakes and the noodles were a bit of a letdown! Everything else was delicious. As always, the interior is clean and the tableware is new, which feels very pleasant. I think that is the perk of a brand-new shop, so why not come check it out!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
