Chinaroom, Grand Hyatt Tokyo: A 3,410-Yen Weekday Lunch

A note on the words: hatsu-gatsuo is the season’s first catch of bonito, prized in Japan for its clean, fresh flavor and served here sashimi-style under a savory Chinese black bean sauce. Dim sum refers to bite-sized Cantonese delicacies, featuring xiao long bao (steamed soup dumplings filled with rich broth). Asari are Japanese littleneck clams that lend a gentle brininess to fried rice, while nira (garlic chives) contribute a mild aromatic fragrance. Annin tofu is almond jelly, a silky, chilled dessert a chilled almond-flavored jelly.

Chinaroom

Chinaroom on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Is that Roppongi Hills, or rather Grand Hyatt Tokyo? The two are connected on the inside so I have never really thought much about it, but here is a Chinese restaurant in the Grand Hyatt: “Chinaroom”. Having come to Roppongi Hills after a while, I decided to take care of lunch at the Grand Hyatt. It still has an intimidating atmosphere that feels hard to walk into, but once you step inside, the front desk staff guides you in warmly, ha.

Anything other than the weekday lunch set turns into à la carte dishes, so the weekday lunch set is really the only choice!

After a short wait, the first part of the course got underway!

Hatsu-gatsuo with black bean sauce

Hatsu-gatsuo with black bean sauce

It looks appetizing right from the opening dish, ha.
The black bean sauce goes so well with it! It is refreshing and delicious. An sashimi-like feel in Chinese cooking feels kind of rare, I think.

Dim sum chef's recommended Cantonese-style dim sum trio

Three kinds of dim sum, though they say the one on the left is steamed pork with olives.
The soup dumpling is delicious! Bursting with meat juices. The bigger discovery for me was realizing, “Ah, so this is what steamed pork with olives tastes like!”

Fried rice with asari clams and nira

Fried rice with asari clams and nira

And the main dish is fried rice with asari clams and nira. This is seriously delicious, ha.
The loose, separate grains of the fried rice give it that high-end Chinese restaurant feel, which is great, but the asari clams and nira pair together so well! It is good. The overall seasoning is gentle, so neither the nira nor the asari clam asserts itself too aggressively, but the faintly fragrant flavor is exquisite. Apparently the fried rice changes monthly, or seasonally, so it seems this is something you can only eat during this season. You never know when it will change, so I was glad I came across it!

Thank you for the meal!

An elegant lunch at a hotel Chinese restaurant once in a while is really nice. The staff’s attentiveness was flawless, the food was delicious, and I felt I would love to come back when I have time again. It also gives me something to look forward to, wondering what kind of flavor the next fried rice might bring!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
