Oh! Toro Kitchen, Shibuya: A 1,400-Yen Tekkadon That Turns Out to Be Bluefin

A note on the words: tekkadon is a bowl of rice topped with slices of raw tuna, and jo means the premium grade. Hon-maguro is bluefin tuna, and chutoro is the medium-fatty cut. Negitoro is finely minced fatty tuna mixed with chopped scallion, and a yukhoe bowl borrows the Korean style of serving seasoned raw fish over rice.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. While looking for a place to have lunch in Shibuya, I spotted a tuna bowl spot: “Sakanaya no Maguro Shokudo — the fishmonger’s tuna diner — OH! TORO KITCHEN”. I suppose it turns into an izakaya at night; a restaurant dedicated solely to tuna feels rather uncommon too.

The interior has a wood-toned feel, and indeed it might just feel a bit like a fishmonger’s shop.

Tuna is the foundation here. Beyond raw tuna bowls, there are cooked options like the tuna bloody tartare set — their name for it — tuna steak, and fried oysters. After mulling it over, I opted for the jo tekkadon, which looked to be what they push the most.

Now then, it is hot out, so how about starting with a beer! Delicious!

Yes, looks good!
As expected from a jo tekkadon, the tuna leans a little toward chutoro, although the odd sinewy piece turns up. I dissolved the wasabi in soy sauce, drizzled it all over, and dug in! Mmm, delicious. The tuna is tender and nicely rich with fat. The sinewy bit was only about one slice, nothing that bothered me in the least. The portion of rice was just right too, easy to finish in no time. Looking closely, the jo tekkadon uses hon-maguro (bluefin tuna). It looked visibly better than the standard tekkadon, so if you are ordering, even at 1,400 yen, I might recommend the jo tekkadon.

The beer sat forgotten while I tore through the bowl, and then miso soup to warm the finish.
Lunch ended not with an after-meal coffee, but with the beer!

Thank you for the meal!

Since it was lunch at what turns into an izakaya at night, I had wondered how it would be, but the tuna was better than expected and thoroughly satisfying. Honestly, at 1,400 yen for this, the value is completely fine. What is more, with free refills on rice and miso soup, the volume is thoroughly satisfying too! When lunch is this good, you want to drop by at night. It was a great little spot.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
