A Kaisendon Shop Hiding Behind a Stern Front Door
Kaisendon is a bowl of rice topped with assorted raw fish — tuna, sea urchin, salmon roe, whatever is good that morning. Maguro-tei does nothing else. The exterior looks severe and traditional; inside, anime plays on the screen and there is merchandise on the walls, which is about as Akihabara as a fish restaurant gets.
Read the Small Print on the Menu
The menu carries a line that I read and did not process: the rice is served large by default. I upgraded from the mid-tier bowl to a bigger one because I wanted more chutoro tuna. That was the error.
What arrived was sashimi packed edge to edge, and beneath it a bowl filled to the brim with rice — not a normal portion with fish on top, but a full large bowl of rice plus a full plate of fish. The staff offered me an extra plate to decant onto, which tells you how often this happens.
I moved all the fish to the side plate and worked through it. The sashimi is genuinely good — bright and fresh, though the sea urchin carried a faint alum note. I finished every piece of fish and surrendered with about a third of the rice left, which I still feel bad about.
The lesson: order the smaller bowl. At the right volume this is an excellent lunch. At the wrong one it becomes an endurance event.
