Jingisukan YOSHIHIKO, Azabu-juban: Three Kinds of Hogget

A note on the words: jingisukan is lamb or mutton grilled at your own table on a domed cast-iron pan, and the name is the Japanese form of Genghis Khan. Hogget is the butchers’ word for meat from a sheep of roughly one to two years old, older than lamb and younger than mutton. Otoshi is a small appetizer you are charged for, and it is not a scam, it is the cover charge.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. So, dinner this time. I was hunting around Azabu-juban when a jingisukan place caught my eye. Unexpectedly good-looking, I thought, and in I went. The name of the shop is Jingisukan YOSHIHIKO, Azabu-juban. One of the people with me knows baseball, and apparently it is the shop of Yoshihiko Takahashi, a former player. I do not know much about baseball so the name does not really land for me, but opening a place in Azabu-juban did strike me as a very baseball-player thing to do. ^^

There seem to be hogget from all sorts of places, so for a start I decided to have three kinds.

Jingisukan

First up, a Sapporo Black Label. Say jingisukan and somehow it has to be a Sapporo.

Otoshi

Splendid that even the otoshi comes with proper lamb on it. It goes beautifully with the crunch of the onion.

The juicy meat has no gaminess at all and is very easy to eat. You know good lamb the moment it hits your tongue. Lovely.

Good to see plenty of single dishes on the menu as well, and every one of them is good.

Said to be Yoshihiko’s most popular wine. Floral, nicely balanced on the acidity, and it goes well with lamb!

This lamb is spot on too. I tried the three kinds side by side and every one of them was seriously good.

Three kinds of lamb later I was properly full, so that was the end of it.

Thank you for the meal!

Well, that was a very good night.
Azabu-juban has several well-known jingisukan places, but this one is strong on price, on taste and on the room alike. I sat there regretting that I had not come here before, and thinking once again that there are still plenty of good places out there. So next time I want jingisukan, I will be dropping in here. It was delicious.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
