A note on the words: Kami-Itabashi is a quiet residential stop in northern Tokyo with a long covered shopping street beside the station. Shokupan is the square white loaf sold in thick slices in every Japanese bakery. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. This time I had business in Kami-Itabashi! I was wandering along the shopping street thinking about lunch when I came across a promising, cafe-ish sort of place. The menu looked stylish too, so in I went. I could not work out where the name was written anywhere^^ but looking it up afterward I discovered it was a beer bar called General Paler! So it is a bar in the evening. It looks stylish, so it seems rather promising.

There are all sorts of things on the menu, but it looks to be run single-handed, so ordering something complicated for a large group would be hard work^^
After a little hesitation I went light and asked for the grilled mackerel sandwich.
I had not known it was a beer bar, but I ordered a lunchtime beer and settled in to wait.

The temperature has been climbing lately and it is the season when beer tastes good!
After a while, this arrived.
A mackerel sandwich! A good large piece of mackerel sticking out over the edge, which is excellent. The nicely browned shokupan is appetizing.
Inside there is salad and tartar sauce. Take a big bite and the fatty grilled mackerel and the tartar make a fine marriage. Mackerel sandwiches really are good.
There is a fair amount of it, and half was honestly enough to fill me up^^
Well, half of it is still a whole slice of shokupan! Thoroughly satisfying!
A carbonara with punch to it, made with garlic and spices, apparently.
That looked good too.
The shopping street around here has plenty of places to eat, which is a fine thing! A beer bar lunch I wandered into. There is terrace-ish seating too, which makes for a good atmosphere. At this time of year the sun may be too strong at midday, but drinking outside in the evening might be lovely! The mackerel sandwich was good, so for a light lunch this comes recommended!
