A note on the words: yakitori is chicken grilled on skewers over charcoal, seasoned either with salt or with tare, a sweet soy glaze. The cuts on this menu are hatsu, the heart; seseri, the neck meat; and reba, the liver. Edamame are young soybeans boiled in the pod, shiso is the perilla leaf, and ume is the salted Japanese plum. Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. I was wandering around Roppongi wondering whether there was anywhere to drink quickly and cheaply. The Senkushiya I went to last time is a different branch, and it turns out there is another Senkushiya, so off I went to the shop diagonally opposite the one from last time. The yakitori was good, as I recall. Rather looking forward to it. The shop has a pleasantly rough-and-ready feel and the smoke is billowing lol. Well, this is exactly what you want!
As ever there is a long menu with yakitori at the center of it, so as ever the plan is to eat whatever takes my fancy!
Plump, springy hatsu! With Senkushiya, the rule is that you should just order everything written on the recommended-skewers sheet! The springy texture with a clean hit of salt on it — seriously good.
Seseri under a heap of scallion! The mildly spicy tare suits it.
A standard! I feel as though I have not had edamame in a long time.
Sweet tomato inside bacon. Grilling it takes the sharpness off the acidity. Good.
Asparagus wrapped in pork belly, with that crisp-then-melting texture you cannot resist.
After this I completely forgot to take photos lol
I ordered the house specialty, cheese-pea, and something grilled with ume plum and shiso, and fin!
And all this is quite cheap, at this shop. Which is why I keep dropping in, if I am honest. When you turn up on a whim you do not go for the all-you-can-drink deal, do you, and then the highballs get out of hand and that is what really does the damage to the bill — precisely because the yakitori is good, the drinking runs away with you! So: this is Roppongi, but I want to drink roughly. I want to drink roughly, but obviously I would like the food to be good. This is the shop that grants that selfish wish!
