Rokumeiken, Toyosu Market: Everything at 800 Yen

A note on the words: Toyosu Market is the wholesale fish market that replaced Tsukiji in 2018, out on the Tokyo Bay waterfront, with a floor of restaurants above the trading halls. Yoshoku is Japanese-style Western food — the dishes Japan built its own versions of from the Meiji era onward, such as fried shrimp and pork cutlets. A teishoku is a set meal: a main dish with rice, miso soup and a pickle or two, priced as one thing. Aji is horse mackerel, and aji fry is the breaded, deep-fried version. One link in this article goes to a Japanese-only article about an earlier visit to the market. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Rokumeiken

Rokumeiken on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. This time I decided to go and have another look around Toyosu Market. Last time I went early in the morning (in Japanese), but this time it was a leisurely just-before-noon. Once again I drifted through the restaurant floor wondering what to eat. Some of them, like one of the ramen shops, are open only to people who work in the market! Well, I am curious, but if I cannot go in there is nothing to be done. And really, if the market people alone keep the seats turning over, there is no need to let anybody else in lol lol lol

So this time I went for Rokumeiken, a yoshoku place that looked unlikely to draw tourists!
I picked somewhere doing yoshoku set meals that the market people would plausibly use for their own lunch.

Rokumeiken

It appears to be an old shop — did it move here, I wonder?

Excellent. A long list of teishoku set meals.
And at 800 yen! Cheap!!! Promising^^

After a great deal of dithering I came back to the thought that this is Toyosu, so the fish should be good.
The fried horse mackerel with rice it is! It has been a while since I had aji fry.

Fried horse mackerel with rice (800 yen)

Water is self-service. A bright, clean room.
A wait after ordering, and the fried horse mackerel with rice was ready!

Fried horse mackerel with rice (800 yen)

Very good!
Two fish, a little smaller than medium, fried to a nice color.
Cabbage for the vegetable, a generous bowl of rice, and miso soup. This is all you need.

Fried horse mackerel with rice (800 yen)

One bite and it is crisply fried and delicious.
With lemon juice, sauce and mustard on it, it goes wonderfully with rice.
It is an ordinary fried horse mackerel, but this is exactly the sort of thing that tastes good!

Some of the backbone had crumbled into it, which I did notice, but that is a matter of how it was filleted^^
Take that as part of the everyday set-meal experience lol
The rice comes in a great quantity, so you are certain to end up full. Splendid.

Thank you for the meal!

An ordinary set meal, in the best sense of the word. I do not think any other description would be more or less accurate. A set-meal shop holding up the stomachs of the people who work in the market, and reasonably priced with it — splendid. Indeed, it starts to seem that the restaurants inside the market might do better to stop relying on inbound tourists and simply let the market people in^^

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
