A note on the words: horumon means the offal cuts grilled at a yakiniku table — tripe, intestine, heart and the rest — and shops built around them are their own genre in Tokyo. Mino is the first stomach of the cow, harami the diaphragm, and nankotsu the cartilage. Tare is the sweet soy marinade the meat is steeped in or dipped into. Shochu is a distilled spirit, usually cut with something. Hoppy is a beer-flavored, near-zero-alcohol mixer that Tokyo drinkers cut shochu with; Dry Zero is Asahi’s non-alcoholic beer, and the shop’s Dorappy does the same trick with that instead. Shimbashi is the salaryman drinking district just south of Ginza. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

Karen 6-gou-ten on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.
Well then, this is Hangover Meshi. Shimbashi has an enormous number of places to drink. I do not know it especially well, so I was drifting along wondering what to eat next when a sign with a great deal of character appeared down a narrow alley.

A horumon grill! And the sixth branch of Karen at that! How many are there lol
Black lettering on a red sign somehow suggests cheapness — or am I imagining it^^

Draft beer 390 yen! Excellent! Cheap by today’s standards lol

Right, plenty to choose from, so let us go a la carte!
Now, what to drink first…

What lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol
This is a new one. Why not just have Hoppy, you might say — but Dry Zero lol lol lol
Cutting a non-alcoholic beer with shochu lol lol The sheer nerve of turning a non-alcoholic drink into an alcoholic one.
Naturally I ordered one!

Mmm, a complicated sort of thing. Or rather — there is quite a lot of shochu in it! Which is welcome.

The first horumon was the prime mino! Cut into good large pieces and looking excellent!

Steeped in a strongly flavored tare, with a firm taste to it.
This is yakiniku as a drinking snack, plainly! Delicious.

Mmm. Delicious. Grilled meat really is the finest companion to a beer (or to a Dorappy)!

What was this one? I have a feeling it might have been nankotsu, the cartilage. I no longer really remember lol
Which I take as proof of how good the drink was, and how well it went with it!

The ordinary harami too. 980 yen for this. As a drinking snack this much is quite enough!
Incidentally, since beer is 390 yen, I was on beer for the whole second half^^
The Dorappy is 440 yen, which does make you think you may as well have the beer.
So — a yakiniku place I wandered into. Cheap, and none the worse for it. The tare and the seasoning generally run on the strong side, so using it as a second-round beer snack with grilled meat works perfectly well. I have a feeling I drank a fair amount, yet it came to a little over 4,000 yen a head, which is very cheap indeed! Recommended.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
