Fuji Soba, Akasaka: A New Branch Nobody Asked For, and I Ordered Udon by Mistake

A note on the words: soba are thin buckwheat noodles, while udon are thick wheat-flour noodles known for their chewy bounce. Fuji Soba is a chain of quick-service noodle counters, making an accidental order of boiled-to-order udon an unexpected disruption to the kitchen’s routine.

Nadai Fuji Soba Akasaka on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. A shop right on the corner of the intersection facing TBS. Cozy Corner was in here originally and I used to go there often, but unfortunately it closed.
For a while they had construction going on inside for the renovations. I was wondering what was going to open here, but…

Why did it have to be Fuji Soba?!

No, my apologies to the people involved, but…
There is a Yoshi Soba, another soba chain, right nearby! And come to think of it, if you walk just a little way, there is already a Fuji Soba right in front of Mitsuke Station!!

Well, now that it is here, there is no helping it. I don’t often get the chance to visit a brand-new Fuji Soba anyway, so I decided to check it out.
It seems the mini curry set is discounted to celebrate the opening!

And so, the mini curry set was the only choice. Naturally, with cold soba.

So I waited for a while, and it was not coming out at all!
Wait, ha, how could that happen? I thought, just as a voice came from the kitchen: “Boiling the udon right now!”

Huh… what?

Taking a closer look at my meal ticket, I had picked cold udon, ha.
Oh man, sorry to the staff, ha; I get the feeling they had hardly expected an udon order to come in, and I threw them into a rush.
Ordering anything other than soba here was like an area manager turning up unannounced and sending the kitchen into a scramble.

While waiting, I checked out the clean interior.

And then my turn for the udon arrived.

When I went up to pick it up, there was a beginner’s badge on the staff member’s chest! Sorry for putting you through an unusual order.

Well, but even cold udon, I’m sure there are people who eat it here.
Without worrying about it, I took a bite, and the udon is good, ha. It has an incredible springy chewiness, or rather, amazing elasticity.
It really fills you up. It had been a while since I last had cold udon, but this might actually be unexpectedly delicious.

And the curry is your standard sort.
Eating ordinary curry like this makes you realize just how much care goes into the curry at the standing soba counter by Akasaka-mitsuke Station that I go to every morning, ha.

Well, at 550 yen this is cheap, but normally it was 630 yen, was it? That seems a little on the pricey side, maybe.

Thank you for the meal!

So, I checked out the new Fuji Soba. The shop and the tableware were all brand-new, so that felt quite nice. That said, even setting aside that I ended up with udon, the shop in front of Mitsuke Station is faster and has the easy feel of a place that has been running a while. The prices are about the same, too. I will probably end up going over there instead.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
