A note on the words: masala papad is a thin, crisp lentil wafer topped with diced tomato, onion and cilantro; Chicken Yummy Masala is the house curry finished with a swirl of fresh cream; saag mutton (spinach mutton) is mutton stewed in pureed spiced spinach; and tandoori chicken tikka is boneless chicken marinated in yogurt and spices and charred in the tandoor. Cheese naan is stuffed with melted cheese, and momo are spiced Nepali dumplings. In this article, these rich curries and izakaya snacks serve as accompaniments for highballs.

Curry lovers, the wait is over — it’s Hangover Meshi time!
This time I headed to “Asian Dining Yummy,” an Indian restaurant near Shinjuku South Exit (…is that what you call that area?). Famous for its cheese naan, apparently people even line up for it at lunchtime. Above all, it’s an ethnic izakaya where you can casually enjoy my beloved wide variety of Asian cooking and curries! It was somewhere I had wanted to check out at least once.

Climbing up the stairs, there are several nice family-restaurant-style booth seats. Spacious seating is always welcome!

The lovely scent of spices wafts through the air — smells delicious! Right, let’s eat!
Now then, let’s start off with a highball!

Sooooo good!

A thin, crisp wafer covered edge to edge with finely diced tomato and onion. Breaking it by hand with a light crunch releases a gentle waft of spices. Biting into it brings first the salinity of the wafer, followed by the tartness of tomato and the sharp kick of green chili. The fresh scent of cilantro. Being thin and crispy, it’s very easy to keep snacking on!

It’s not a lineup you often see at a curry shop. The aroma of garlic and chili is wonderful. Being an Asian canteen, having both curry and stir-fried water spinach is a real treat!

A swirl of fresh cream across the deep scarlet surface looks quite cute, ha. The curry bearing the restaurant’s name! Dipping in a spoon, it feels heavy and thick, the kind that pushes forward with pure richness. The first bite brings the sweet-sour tang of tomato, layered with the sweetness of onion, and shortly after, the heat of the spices slowly rises up your throat. The chicken pieces are generous, and biting in, the fibers soaked with sauce fall apart tenderly. Having asked for it spicy, the pronounced heat pairs flawlessly with alcohol!

Blackened char in places along the edges, with a mouthwatering smoky charcoal aroma! Being bite-sized and boneless, you can pop them right into your mouth without fussing with skewers, which makes them ideal izakaya snacks. Biting into them, the outside is fragrant while the inside is astonishingly moist. The tangy acidity from marinating in yogurt and spices is delicious.

While drinking with curry as my snack, they repeatedly asked me, “Don’t you want naan?!”, so I ordered their recommended cheese naan, ha. Pinching up a toasted edge, the cheese stretches endlessly, ha. The dough has real thickness and a chewy, satisfying bite.
The cheese isn’t overly salty and has no rubbery feel — perhaps this is why it has such a good reputation. While hot, the fun of the stretch takes center stage, and as it settles a bit, the sweetness of the cheese and the fragrance of the dough seem to step to the front? Still, while delicious, it seems to carry quite a few calories, so sharing between two people would probably be just about right, ha.

Having ordered a tomato-based curry, this time it was spinach-based saag mutton.
The aroma of spices and butter is wonderful. The pureed spinach sauce is thick and heavy; tasting it, the sweetness of the spinach hits first, followed by a juicy spread of rich mutton fat aroma. On the other hand, there’s hardly any heat, and the tender mutton nestled inside slowly flakes apart as you chew — delicious!
And so, drinking highballs with curry as your accompaniment is truly irresistible! Every dish was delicious. Above all, the thick, heavy texture of the curries makes them fantastic for eating alongside drinks! Thin and watery curry is hard to treat as a drinking snack! Beyond proper curry, being able to enjoy an Asian menu too makes this a fantastic shop! I’ll be sure to remember it next time I drink around here.
May you encounter delicious food today as well!
