Komoro Soba, Akasaka: 410 Yen, and Free Wasabi on the Table

A note on the words: tanuki soba is buckwheat noodles topped with tenkasu (crispy fried tempura batter flakes), served here chilled, and distinctively with sliced cucumber and kamaboko (cured fish cake). Mori and zaru soba are chilled plain noodles served on a strainer with dipping sauce, meant to be seasoned with fresh scallions and sharp wasabi from the tabletop condiment tubs.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Searching for a morning soba place I hadn’t visited yet brought up “Komoro Soba”. Come to think of it, there certainly was one near TBS. The area in front of TBS is a fiercely contested soba battleground, ha. Well, I suppose it’s because employees from TBS and Hakuhodo come by. So without further ado, my very first time entering Komoro Soba. You buy a meal ticket and take a seat. When your order is ready, they call you, so you go up to collect it.

Oh, cheap. 410 yen for tanuki soba is a new personal record! Up until now they had been between 450 and 490 yen, so 410 yen stands out as a clear head cheaper, ha. How will the flavor and portion hold up? With that in mind, I chose the chilled tanuki soba.

After waiting a short while, my order was called, so I carried the tanuki soba to my seat.

Chilled tanuki soba

Ooh, looks delicious.
The agedama is flawless. They use real tenkasu, crisp and crunchy. Having cucumber and kamaboko (fish cake) is a signature touch of Komoro Soba. Most places just give you scallions and wakame. There is plenty of broth in the bowl too. Taking a first bite, the soba has a firm, resilient chew and tastes delicious. Yes, the tanuki soba here is really good! And then, opening up the tabletop condiments one by one…!

Wait!!!! There are scallions and wasabi!!!!

Scallions and wasabi among the tabletop condiments! Come to think of it, I had just been wondering where the wasabi was!!

Could this be any better?!

Chilled tanuki soba

In other words, this means all-you-can-add scallions and wasabi. It feels like every single thing that had bothered me at previous soba shops has been completely solved, ha. This is an absolute blowout victory for Komoro Soba.

Thank you for the meal!

So for 410 yen, you get decent toppings, delicious noodles, and unlimited wasabi and scallions. There is a decent amount of broth too, leaving no impression of skimping. Taking all that into account, when it comes to chilled tanuki soba, Komoro Soba might just be the top pick, ha. It makes me want to explore even more soba shops, ha.
