Le Coq Roti, Ikebukuro: Craft Beer and Almost Nothing but Meat

A note on the words: zabuton is a tender, richly marbled cut taken from the chuck rib, named for its flat square shape resembling a Japanese sitting cushion. Sangen pork refers to premium pork bred from three distinct pig varieties, known for its sweet, clean fat. The pork cutlet, katsuretsu, is breaded and deep-fried, served here thin and crisp under three contrasting sauces. Rotisserie chicken is seasoned whole chicken slow-roasted on a spit, brought whole to the table before being carved into juicy pieces. Otoshi is the seating charge appetizer served automatically at Japanese bars, which was cheese on this visit.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Having decided to go for drinks in Ikebukuro for the first time in a while, the place we booked was this spot, “Le Coq Roti”. A meat bar with craft beer — an easy place to drop into! Ikebukuro feels as though its mood has been shifting little by little during the time I have been away. This place is on the second story of a building! The windows are large, so you can see inside easily from the street.

We started ordering all sorts of things!

First, beer!

The otoshi was cheese.

Garlic edamame (530 yen)

Garlic edamame (530 yen)

First up was garlic edamame, chosen because it seemed likely to come out quickly.

The pepper kicks in much stronger than the garlic, and it is delicious!

Rotisserie chicken 1/2 (2,950 yen)

They showed it to us before cutting it up!!

Here it is after carving — roasted juicy and plump. This goes wonderfully with beer too!

Grilled spare ribs with mashed potato (1,800 yen)

This sauce is insanely good. The meat itself is remarkably tender; you scrape it off the bone and carve it nicely before eating.
It goes great with beer, but eating it with the mashed potatoes is delicious too. That slight spicy kick is fantastic.

I could not help ordering another beer.

Sangen pork cutlet with three sauces (1,800 yen)

Sangen pork cutlet with three sauces (1,800 yen)

The white one is cheese fondue sauce, the green is basil sauce, and the red is tomato sauce! A stylish color palette. They make a striking Italian tricolor, so it would have looked smart arranged to match the flag, but I wonder why they went with this order. The cutlet is fried thin and crisp, making it very easy to eat.

Every sauce is delicious, but the cheese fondue sauce was so rich that I think it was my favorite.

And another beer added to the tally ^^

Low-temperature roast zabuton steak (2,100 yen)

It feels like we have eaten nothing but meat, but since it is a meat bar, fair enough!

To look at, it is pink and very pretty. It somehow looks almost like processed meat, ha.
The umami is concentrated tightly, yet it is tender and very easy to eat.

Thank you for the meal!

Looking back on it later, we really did eat nothing but meat, ha. Still, being able to feast on meat to our heart’s content alongside delicious craft beer and highballs made it thoroughly worthwhile. The seating was roomy, and having booked a table by the window, gazing out over the street was quite comfortable.

Right after we first arrived, it seemed a bit crowded so it took some time between ordering and dishes arriving, but

the latter half was smooth, and I might well want to use this place again when drinking in Ikebukuro.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
