Sanda Hanten, Roppongi: A Little of Everything for 1,800 Yen

A note on the words: Peking duck is roast duck whose lacquered skin is served in thin pancakes with scallion and a sweet fermented bean sauce. Chinjao rosu is the Japanese name for beef or pork stir-fried in strips with green pepper. Mapo tofu is tofu simmered with minced meat in a bean-paste sauce, hot in its Sichuan form and often mild in Japan. Char siu is pork marinated in a sweet-savory glaze and roasted. Shredded dried tofu is firm pressed tofu cut into strands and dressed like a cold noodle salad. Tokusen means specially selected. Soup soba here is Chinese wheat noodles in broth, and yakisoba is the same noodles stir-fried. Donki is the everyday short name for Don Quijote, a Japanese discount store chain. Roppongi is a nightlife and office quarter in central Tokyo. Hangover Meshi is the name of this blog, and meshi means a meal.

Sanda Hanten

Sanda Hanten on Tabelog (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. After a long while I headed over toward the Roppongi crossing to look for lunch. I wonder whether demolition work has started by now on the Roi Building in front of the Don Quijote. Go a while without looking and the scenery changes little by little, I was thinking as I walked — and then an unfamiliar shop caught my eye.

Sanda Hanten

The name: “Sanda Hanten.” Something about it got my attention, so in I went.

Once inside, there is suddenly a private-room sort of space off to the side and a staircase right in front of you. I assumed reception must be upstairs, but in fact the cashier is past that private-room sort of space. I went straight up by mistake, got called back, and that is how I found out, ha. It may not feel much like a restaurant. And the place they showed me to was a private room, yes, but the sort of private room where walls have been put up on all four sides of you. Well, it did not particularly bother me — a unique shop, ha.

Special lunch set (1,800 yen)

Sanda Hanten

This is the lunch menu.
For the tokusen set, apparently you pick one from shark fin, crab, abalone and sea urchin, and pair it with one of soup soba, yakisoba, fried rice or plain rice. Well, the special lunch set will do nicely this time, I thought, so that is what I chose.

Special lunch set (1,800 yen)

First, some tea while I settle in for a bit^^

Special lunch set (1,800 yen)

It is a proper private room, so I could even open up the laptop I had with me and get a little work done^^

And here is what came out.
The special lunch set. Apparently it is not written up anywhere at the moment, but in fact Peking duck comes with it — so getting Peking duck was lucky! Whether that is only for now or was only for that one day I cannot say, so do be aware that normally it may not be included^^

It is the style where a little of a lot of different things is laid out, with a mound of rice beside it.

A little of lots of different things — very good indeed!

There are appetizers, but they told me to start with the Peking duck while it is still warm.

So good!

The crisp Peking duck with the sweet sauce, the crunchy scallion inside and the chewy pancake — the combination is outstanding.
And above all, when you do sometimes get Peking duck that is thin and empty, one packed properly full is splendid!

Back, then, to the appetizer sort of thing. From the left: shredded dried tofu, char siu, and simmered pork. Every one of them mildly seasoned and good.

And this side is the series of dishes to go with rice.
Not bad at all — chinjao rosu, a meatball, and behind them shrimp chili and mapo tofu.
That is just it, is it not: this much of each of a lot of things is exactly what I want to eat! Every one properly made and good. (Then again, if they only plate this much and it still tastes this good, I do wonder whether they really cook such small amounts?)

The mapo tofu is the sort with no heat in it, and the shrimp chili is the usual sweet kind of shrimp chili. How well they go with rice goes without saying!

Special lunch set

No, this was thoroughly satisfying!

Thank you for the meal!

So — this time it was a shop I walked into more or less on a whim, but I have taken quite a liking to this a-little-of-everything style of Chinese! I wonder what it is like in the evening. A shop I could see myself dropping into now and then, and I am glad I found it at lunchtime.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
