New Matsusaka, Roppongi: Fillet Steak and Seafood off the Teppan

A note on the words: teppanyaki is food cooked to order on a large flat iron griddle, usually right in front of you at the counter — it’s a genre of its own in Japan, closer to a steakhouse than to sushi or ramen. Kuroge wagyu is Japan’s classic black-haired wagyu breed, the source of most of the marbled beef you’ll see on steakhouse menus.

Hey, this is Hangover Meshi. This time I headed to “New Matsusaka,” a teppanyaki restaurant in GEMS Roppongi, the restaurant tower near Roppongi Hills. Apparently it’s a long-established teppanyaki restaurant from Osaka that expanded into Roppongi. I’ve been to GEMS Roppongi a fair amount by now, so I’m one step closer to conquering the whole building. This time it was the 7th floor, I think.

Step off the elevator and suddenly you’re hit with teppanyaki-restaurant vibes ^^

Black oolong tea

I ordered tea to start. They mentioned you can pay extra to change the type or amount of meat, but I went with the default this time.

Scallops, shrimp, and — sea bream, maybe? They start grilling the meat right alongside the fish.

A slice of sea bream, one scallop, and three shrimp! Cooked just right. The fish is delicious!

Look closely and there’s stir-fried bean sprouts that aren’t even on the menu. Just a small portion, but delicious, and a nice touch!

Flambé, lol

Three kinds of grilled vegetables come along too — lotus root, pumpkin, and bok choy, I think.
Despite being called filet, it’s a wonderfully juicy, fatty cut, so eating it with a little wasabi for balance was delicious! At 100g it was plenty — if it were 200g I might not have been able to finish it.

Thank you for the meal!

So there I was, treating myself to a fancy teppanyaki lunch, and thanks to the big windows, the view is really something on a clear afternoon! Eating teppanyaki in that bright, open atmosphere was really nice. Between the salad, the seafood, and the vegetables, 100g of meat turned out to be plenty. If anything, I could have upgraded to Kuroge Wagyu (+1,300 yen) and gone with 70g of filet instead, lol. It’s a great experience, so I recommend it!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
