ROPPONGI AIR: A Rooftop Barbecue, in the Rain

A note on the words: reimen is the chilled noodle bowl Japanese grill restaurants serve to close a meal, borrowed from Korean naengmyeon. Nomihodai, “all-you-can-drink,” is a fixed-price open bar for a set number of hours, standard at Japanese party courses. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

ROPPONGI AIR

ROPPONGI AIR on AutoReserve (English) — opening hours, payment details and the Japanese address are kept up to date there, not here.

I want to eat something good today too. This is Hangover Meshi. Today I was invited out to Roppongi, about next door to Tokyo Midtown. To ROPPONGI AIR, on the fourth and fifth floors of a building. Their selling point is apparently that you can barbecue under the stars on the roof in the middle of Roppongi — but unfortunately it rained that day. Nobody wants to be soaked through, so we spent the evening indoors.

ROPPONGI AIR

If it is fine you grill outside, and if it rains the staff grill indoors and bring the food to you, which is a welcome arrangement.

Dishes worth noting

Both floors entirely to ourselves. Barbecue course with three hours of all-you-can-drink, 12,000 yen

A very easy course to understand.

Raining, but the mood is barbecue

So, first you have to get up to the fourth floor, and there is no elevator. Climb it yourself.
Inside, a smart, party-feeling room done mainly in white. Very Roppongi.

Drinks are help-yourself from what is set out.

For now, a cold Corona. (I feel as though the Corona rate has been high lately ^^)

Right, the first thing to arrive was salad.

Two of these for ten people, I suppose. For now, divided up neatly.
People who are good at dividing things like this are impressive. Splitting each ingredient into fifths makes it easier, but how far you count something as one ingredient varies from person to person as well. Difficult.

And then scallops. They grill them upstairs and bring them down, so it is essentially a barbecue menu. Having it brought to you like this makes it feel somehow finer than a barbecue. Two each, I think it was. A good amount of food, too.

Salmon. Grilled with herbs and lemon, so it is fragrant.
What comes with it is hollandaise, I think. How on earth would you do this on a barbecue if you were doing it yourself?

Raining, but the mood is barbecue

Lamb chops.
Eaten with grain mustard. Herbs alongside give it their scent and it is good.
It has a smartness that does not feel much like barbecue.

Chicken wearing its spices. They have taken it right off the bone and cut it so it is easy to eat.
Around here it starts to dawn on you: perhaps it is better and more neatly arranged when you do not do it yourself.

Raining, but the mood is barbecue

Beef with the feel of roast beef. Thinly sliced, eaten with wasabi and a wine sauce.

Raining, but the mood is barbecue

To close, a small reimen.

Thank you for the meal!

It was supposed to be a rooftop barbecue, but by the end I thought it was rather good that everything was done for us. The rain turned out to be convenient. Doing it yourself would be fun too, I am sure, but we would never have grilled it this neatly. So whether you barbecue or not you come away satisfied, which makes it a place you can use with confidence ^^

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
