Sushi Zanmai Takumi, Roppongi: Salad and Sashimi at Lunch

A note on the words: nigiri is a hand-pressed finger of vinegared rice with a slice of fish on top, and sashimi is raw fish served without rice. Maguro means tuna, and zanmai is a word for immersing yourself completely in something — so maguro zanmai names a plate given over entirely to tuna. Kashi refers to a fish market on a riverbank, and a kashi-mori is a platter of whatever the market had that day. Tobiko is flying-fish roe, the small orange beads that pop between the teeth, and crab miso is the rich paste from inside a crab’s shell, here whisked into a dressing.

Well then, a Happy New Year to you! This is Hangover Meshi. I look forward to your company again this year.

Lunch this time was at “Sushi Zanmai Takumi Roppongi Lapiros,” right by the Roppongi crossing, immediately next to the stairs going down to Roppongi Station on the Hibiya Line! Someone in the group said they had never been to a Sushi Zanmai, so — well then, let us go once and see! It is quite a distance from the entrance to the restaurant proper. ^^ The place is enormous.

That said, although I had come to a sushi restaurant this time, I have been eating rather too much of everything lately,
so instead of sushi I ordered a salad and some sashimi a la carte and made that my lunch. ^^

Crab Salad (1,780 yen)

A crab salad, ha. This being properly a sushi restaurant, there is seafood in the salad too.
Tobiko and shredded crab meat. And the dressing, I was told, is a crab-miso dressing. It is on the regular menu, so I assumed it was meant for two or three people to share, but eaten alone it has real substance to it, and works perfectly well as lunch, ha.

And this is the sashimi assortment. This one is probably two servings as well. If you are making a lunch of it without the rice, there is an argument that this is just about the right amount. The sashimi is beautifully fresh — you can tell this is Takumi. All of it was delicious, and I was thoroughly satisfied.

The others were of course eating sushi. That Maguro Zanmai does look good… ha.

This Special Selection Sushi Zanmai looks wonderful too!
The tuna is glistening and looks so good. With sea urchin, salmon roe and red clam on there as well, it is quite a lavish spread.

Thank you for the meal!

So, this time it was Sushi Zanmai! Being the Takumi line, the prices are on the higher side. But I am sure that buys good ingredients, and this is Roppongi, so this is probably about right. I improvised a lunch here without the rice, and it turns out that is quite satisfying on its own — so if you are going to lunch with someone who wants sushi but you yourself want to skip the rice, why not try the salad-plus-sashimi route?!

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
