Le Pain Quotidien, Tokyo Midtown: A Breakfast Worth Getting Up For

A note on the words: pain au chocolat is a chocolate-filled French pastry made from the same laminated dough as a croissant. Kissaten is an old-school Japanese coffee shop, the kind of place that often serves a simple set breakfast alongside its coffee.

Hi, this is Hangover Meshi. This time it’s breakfast! Le Pain Quotidien in Midtown. It’s a bakery that started in Belgium, but I noticed they do breakfast (most of Midtown doesn’t open until 11:00, so I’d never clocked that they were open earlier), so I decided to go in the morning. It was lightly drizzling out, but the place was packed — pretty busy even that early.

There’s a breakfast menu and a brunch menu, and it looks like the kind of place where you can get a properly substantial meal even first thing in the morning.
It might end up a bit heavy for breakfast, but I went with the Flatbread Breakfast! And since you could add smoked salmon for an extra 500 yen, I went ahead and did that too!

Whoa! Huge portion, lol. I’d been wondering what a flatbread even was, and this is it — a simple, flat kind of bread. Two fried eggs! Plus cherry tomatoes, a house-made chili sauce, and what I’m guessing is a tangy yogurt sauce — it all goes together really well. Even with modest expectations, this is genuinely delicious. I tried putting a bit of the smoked salmon on top and eating it together — so good!!

This is such an elegant breakfast, somehow. Thoroughly satisfied.

And here’s the set that the friend I came with ordered — the one named after the restaurant itself.

You get to choose either a pain au chocolat or a croissant, and it comes with organic bread and a baguette on top of that, so this one is seriously generous too. And then there’s coffee, and even juice.

Since you get two drinks, I had the coffee, but the cup is as big as a rice bowl, so it’s a little awkward to drink from, lol.
That said, the coffee itself is very good.

We had a wonderfully relaxed time.

Thanks for the Meal!

There really aren’t that many places to get breakfast around Roppongi and Akasaka. It’s usually soba shops or kissaten morning sets, so the options are pretty limited — I had no idea there was somewhere you could have such a relaxed, elegant breakfast! I thought it was great, so I’d like to make a point of coming back here whenever I want to eat something in the morning.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
