A hamburg steak is the Japanese plate dish of a seasoned ground-beef patty, cooked to a requested doneness and usually eaten with a knife and fork; the word is used here for the patty inside the bun. Lotteria is a Japanese fast-food burger chain. Provolone, Dubliner and Boursin are cow’s-milk cheeses, the first two firm and aged, the last soft and worked through with herbs and garlic; asadero is a soft Mexican melting cheese. Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. So, lunch on this day was at a burger place inside the hotel “Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.” When you go to America you want a burger, do you not. And on top of that, this is apparently the shop of a man called Gordon Ramsay, the sort of person we would call an Iron Chef in Japan. Hell’s Kitchen is Gordon Ramsay’s main restaurant, I think? That one looks fairly expensive, but a burger might not be so dear. So, allowing for the risk of a crowd, I dashed over first thing in the morning.

There is quite a range here. Among the special burgers, ones with entertaining names are lined up — the Celebration Burger, the Truffle Burger, the 24 Hours Burger. There was also something called the Idiot Sandwich out in front of the shop, and…
I was a little curious, but in the end I went with a burger after all.
Right — since I turned up before opening, I was more or less first in.
The slot machines showing faintly in the background feel very Las Vegas.
For a drink I went with — Diet Pepsi! ha Since arriving in America I feel as though I have drunk nothing but sweet things and alcohol.
Drinks do not seem to come attached to your order as a set, no questions asked, the way they do in Japan.
Also, as for soft drinks, refills are free — or rather, when my Diet Pepsi was almost gone they simply brought me another one ha I see; this is the sort of thing that makes me feel a higher price would be fine after all.
And so, the Ultimate Cheese Burger!!
So this is what Ultimate looks like!
Somehow it looks faintly like Lotteria’s Zeppin Cheeseburger ha The silhouette and so on.
If you follow the ultimate all the way down you arrive at bun, meat, cheese! — so perhaps that is why it ends up in this shape.
One bite and, yes, this is good.
The meatiness is just right. Though — they asked me at the start how I wanted it cooked and I said medium rare, but for a hamburg steak medium might have been the better call. It feels as though a proper hamburg steak is sitting in there, and it is very good.
By the look of it, the cheese is a mix of aged provolone, Dubliner and Boursin.
Very mellow, rich and deep in flavor. With a herby aroma folded in as well, this really does feel like the Ultimate.
The burger is a fair amount of food, but the fries come in quantity too.
While you eat, the staff keep coming over to ask how it is. That does not happen much in Japan either (it does at expensive places ha), so it feels fresh! Saying “Fine!” is enough, which keeps it easy.
Incidentally, this is the Hell’s Kitchen Burger that someone else in the party ordered.
This one may be the main event, or at least the better known of the two.
Inside there is asadero cheese, roasted jalapeños I think, avocado, roasted tomatoes and so on.
I was given a bite, and with the jalapeños coming through, this one is a little hot. But it is good. This is a hit as well.
So, I went off to eat a slightly upmarket gourmet burger, and — this being America — it was a fine one. It makes you want to try Gordon Ramsay’s other cooking too. Though in the evening a single meal would probably run to 30,000 yen or more, so that will have to be another time. It was very good, and a good experience.
