A note on the words: Zocalo, the name of the longer course here, is the great central square of Mexico City. Adobo is the chili-and-vinegar marinade the beef is grilled in. Ajillo, used below as a comparison, is the Spanish dish of things simmered in garlic oil, long naturalized in Japanese bars. Nomihodai, “all-you-can-drink,” is a fixed-price open bar for a set stretch of time and is standard with Japanese party courses. A highball is whisky with soda. Prices are as of this writing (August 2026).

I want to eat something good today too. This is Hangover Meshi! This time, a long-established Mexican place in Ebisu. It has apparently been running here for 35 years, and being loved that long raises my hopes considerably. It sits behind Ebisu Bikkuri Sushi. Not far from the station either, which is nice. Whether the pink sign at the entrance reads as Mexican is another question, but it is loud and I like it.

Down the stairs to the basement and it opens into a seriously stylish art space.
Paintings on the walls, handsome ornaments and lamps everywhere. Rather good, is it not. Nice atmosphere.
Zocalo course, nine dishes with all-you-can-drink, 5,900 yen
Mexican course, eight dishes with all-you-can-drink, 5,200 yen
5,900 yen with all-you-can-drink included is cheap. Eight dishes or nine — at this price you find yourself thinking, well then, make it nine.
Beer first!
Corona was, predictably, not part of the all-you-can-drink, but draft beer it is. Good!

Served alongside is a chili-tomato salsa.
Chips like these are the basics, of course.
The salsa balances acidity and heat nicely and tastes good. Incidentally, they are perfectly good to crunch on their own ^^

Mexican salad! This much is for four people.

What is this? Something like a gyoza dumpling, I wondered — but underneath is avocado tartare.
Or rather, it is avocado. It feels like shrimp sitting on top of avocado. Creamy and good.

Nachos!
The same tortilla chips from before, I think, topped with chili meat, cheese and avocado and baked in the oven?
With the sourness of the sour cream on top it is seriously good. I want a whole tray of this each, as a drinking snack.

What to call it — by the look of it, something steeped in oil, like ajillo.
I ate it piled onto baguette. The garlic comes through strongly. Good!

Taco of the day! One each. Beef with bell pepper, onion and tomato.
Hearty stuff. I might prefer a little more vegetable in mine.

I did not expect beef loin at the end.
Mashed potato comes with it, so this is a course with real volume to it. The loin is cooked until it falls apart tender, and it is seriously good. Ugh — partly because I drank too much, of course, but I am full.

And even dessert!
Well now — tequila was supposed to be part of the all-you-can-drink too, but the talking was so enjoyable that I forgot it existed. Beer and highballs the whole way through were plenty on their own. Above all, the sheer amount of food left me very satisfied. 5,900 yen for this is remarkable value. I had a good time. I may well come again.

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
