Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. In Roppongi, tucked along Ryudocho Bijutsukan-dori as you head from Tokyo Midtown to The National Art Center, Tokyo, sits a flashily neon-lit spot called “Pe’z Magic Ears and Eyes Only”. It had caught my eye for quite a while, and this time I finally summoned up the courage to step inside! I had a vague feeling it might have been a burger joint in the past too, but maybe the exterior changed?
With an entrance looking like this, it was a little intimidating to enter, ha!
Stepping inside, while it is certainly a burger place, it is more of a Jazz & Rock Cafe. In the back of the shop sits what looks like some seriously high-end audio gear!
Mellow jazz was playing nicely throughout the room. Right in front of the sound system, customers who presumably came just to listen to the music were sipping coffee and listening intently. I see — so this is the vibe!
Chili burger — 1,200 yen
Avocado burger — 1,200 yen
Cheeseburger — 1,200 yen
Bacon burger — 1,200 yen
Bacon cheeseburger — 1,200 yen
Tuna sandwich — 1,200 yen
Ham and cheese sandwich — 1,200 yen
It seems they have both hamburgers and sandwiches.
While thinking a roast beef sandwich sounded pretty good too, this time I chose the chili burger.
Now then, I waited for a while listening to the music.
Not being a hardcore audiophile myself, I kept a little distance from the speakers so as not to get in the way!
Here is what arrived!
A paper plate, and the skewer pierced through the burger is paper too — extremely eco-conscious! It comes with fries and ketchup, and having the burger tucked into a wrapper right from the start makes it easy to eat.
Taking a bite…! It was far more delicious than anything I had imagined!
The bun is plump, and the cut surface is thoroughly griddled to a crisp. The wonderful aroma of butter and the toasty fragrance are lovely.
Accompanying the crisp lettuce is a chili that does not feel overly spicy.
It pairs wonderfully with the finely ground patty! Simply delicious.
Since it was a Jazz & Rock Cafe, I hadn’t come in with overly high expectations, but the burger is truly superb.
Looking into it afterward, it appears it was originally a dedicated hamburger specialty shop. No wonder it is so good! If they made the patty a slightly coarser, meatier grind, this seems like it could easily be a deeply satisfying burger even if it cost 1,800 yen rather than 1,200. It was delicious!
