Senkushiya, Roppongi: Chicken Hearts and a Cheese-Filled Pepper

A note on the words: hatsu is chicken heart, seseri is the neck meat, and shiro-reba is chicken liver prized for tasting rich and creamy, almost like foie gras. Oni-oroshi is daikon radish grated on a coarse, serrated grater, so it comes out chunkier than the usual fine oroshi — here it’s the otoshi, the small starter dish you’re charged for automatically as a cover charge, not something you order.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. This time we’re at a reasonably priced yakitori place near Roppongi Hills — “Sumibi Kushiyaki Senkushiya.” I was told it’s cheap and delicious, so I’m excited. Took the elevator up to the 2nd floor. The website said B1F, so maybe there’s also seating on 2F? I just went straight up to 2F and got seated without any trouble, so I never actually found out the truth of it lol

The recommended skewers are marked up from all sorts of angles — signature dish, rare cut, best seller, and so on — so it’s easy to pick.
We’re going to work through this recommended list in order, starting from the right!

A la carte

First, a toast with beer and the otoshi — oni-oroshi, coarsely grated daikon radish.

A la carte

Hatsu — Chicken Heart (350 yen)

Hatsu — Chicken Heart (350 yen)

Hatsu! Apparently this place’s signature dish. Took one bite and it was so plump and tender! Like, wait, this is hatsu? I seriously thought that, even though the menu itself said as much. Hatsu is hatsu, sure, but I don’t think I’ve ever had it this tender before. This is delicious!

Seseri Yaki — Chicken Neck (350 yen)

The seseri is also nice and fluffy in texture — delicious.

Cheese Pepper (380 yen)

Cheese Pepper (380 yen)

And this is the cheese pepper! Apparently the most popular item — a green pepper packed full of cheese, wrapped in meat and skewered. Took a bite and it was surprisingly good lol Cheese and green pepper go together so well! I feel like I could actually make this at home — stuff a pepper with cheese, wrap it in meat, and pan-fry it or something. Might give that a try as a reference!

Juicy meat and crisp asparagus. Whoa — delicious.

Tomato Roll (300 yen)

Tomato Roll (300 yen)

And this one is the tomato roll. Here the tartness of the tomato really stands out and it’s great! A tomato that’s been cooked until it goes soft and gooey is just delicious.

Plum and Shiso Chicken (350 yen)

Plum and Shiso Chicken (350 yen)

Chicken tenderloin with plum and shiso. A combination that couldn’t possibly not work. Obviously delicious.
Honestly, every single yakitori at Senkushiya is juicy. So good. Now I get why it’s so recommended!

Thank you for the meal!

So there we have it — Senkushiya. I’ve been around Roppongi for ages, but this was my first time here. And it’s delicious and cheap! So I’ve grown pretty fond of it. My impression is that this is a solid go-to for a casual meal. Definitely worth checking out! Apparently the flagship shop is in Hatsudai, so maybe next time I’ll head over there to try it!?

I ate here and paid for it myself. Nothing on this site is a comped meal.
