A note on the words: SCHMATZ is a German beer hall and restaurant with more than one branch, the Nakameguro one stopped at here for a second round after dinner. An otoshi is the small dish that comes with the seat charge, served here as a pretzel. Sauerkraut is tangy fermented cabbage, set alongside a platter of assorted German sausages. Spatzle are soft egg noodles and goulash is a paprika-spiced stew, both of which the shop appears to offer as well.

Hello, this is Hangover Meshi. Well now, Nakameguro. After dinner at a restaurant called RODEO, we felt like dropping in somewhere for one more drink! Walking along the Meguro River toward Nakameguro Station, right near the station there was a big SCHMATZ! There used to be one in Akasaka too, though I think it ended up closing. German beer and sausages sound great, don’t they! So we decided to stop by. From the looks of it, this one feels more stylish compared to other SCHMATZ branches, and the interior is bright and pleasant.

Having just eaten, we decided to order just a little something to nibble on.
Beer first!
Since we had already had quite a bit to drink earlier, rather than a standard beer we went for something slightly unusual from SCHMATZ’s curated craft beers.
Said to be a collaboration beer with Baeren Brewery! Somehow that gentle bitterness and floral aroma are really good!
The otoshi (cover-charge appetizer) was a pretzel. It had such a beautifully neat shape, ha. It wasn’t sweet.
Fries are the classic bar snack with beer, aren’t they? Even when you are full, they have that magical pull that keeps you picking at them.
The sausage platter! The sausages are great, but the little serving of sauerkraut on the side is quietly wonderful.
They must have explained what each and every sausage was, but I don’t remember a single one, haha.
In any case, the only thing I do remember is that sausages are the absolute best match for beer!
We had intended to just have a quick drink and head home, but one thing led to another and we ended up staying a good while in deep conversation. The beer flowed easily and the food was good. It is great that SCHMATZ has quite a few bar snacks on offer. We didn’t order them this time, but they apparently have spatzle and goulash as well. I began to feel that thinking of it as a German restaurant rather than simply a German beer bar might be closer to the mark. This particular SCHMATZ is stylish, and I would like to come back again.
